Principal's Weekly
|
Dear Families,
Important reminders for next week:
- SUNDAY--We "fall back" and gain an hour with the time change
- MONDAY--Vision screenings for grades 1, 3, and 5.
- TUESDAY--Hearing screenings for grades K, 1, and 2.
Our first official "late start" day was a success! Our teachers were given the opportunity to improve differentiated instruction by working in collaborative teams, sharing ideas and learning from their peers. Our students then arrived on time and the day continued as normal. Thank you for helping to make this important day for our teachers a reality.
Switching gears, I'm excited to announce we are going to pilot a student newspaper in our enrichment classes. A student-led school newspaper provides students with an authentic purpose for reading and writing, as well as offering a platform for leadership and creativity. The entire student population will be invited to participate in a contest "concours" to determine the name of the newspaper. Flyers with details will go home with students next week and will be posted on the Normandale website.
The months are flying by and good things are happening here at Normandale every day.

Health Screening Volunteers Needed
|
The two senses that are vital to our children's school experience are seeing and hearing. Testing these senses is an easy process and the more volunteers we have the smoother the process. Please consider signing up for the annual health screening on Monday and Tuesday, November 4th & 5th.
Three shifts available - take one shift or more!
(Note: at the bottom of the spreadsheet, there are tabs for the various volunteer activities. Click the "Health Screening" tab.)
If you have any questions, please contact the Health Screen Coordinator:

Special Project Needs Volunteers
|
Parents,
The district is requesting parent volunteers for a new math initiative at Normandale. We are looking for one coordinator for Normandale and four parents per grade 1-5. This is a job that can be done at home. Please sign up by November 6th.
Please read the below message from Scott Woelber, K-12 Mathematics Coordinator at Edina Public Schools:
In preparation for the basic facts training day on November 26, Normandale needs to create a box of supplies that each teacher can take back to their classroom to help their students practice basic facts strategies. Doing the marking, sticking, and packing ahead of time will make the training time much more efficient.

Let's Help Our Terrific Interns
|
Fun Thanksgiving Tradition
The Interns will be having a traditional Thanksgiving experience this year on Saturday, November 9th. We're looking for people to help teach them how to make some traditional foods. We're also looking for people willing to donate some of the food items. Please sign up to help or donate!
Can I Catch a Ride?
Help! It's getting cold and our interns need assistance getting around town. If you're already a volunteer, great - and thank you for driving our interns! If you aren't, the Neighborhood Network is an automated system that interns use to request rides from volunteer parents. Use this form to sign-up and make their lives easier.
Have a Coat to Spare?
Please also don't forget that our interns need warm clothing for this winter. Our school has a lending network that the interns can make requests for items they'd like to borrow.

New Staff Bio: Kris Hayes
|
 | Mme Hayes |
Bonjour!
My Name is Kris Hayes and I am excited to be the new part-time Media Assistant here at Normandale Elementary School. When I'm not at Normandale you will find me in the South View Media Center where I have worked for eight years. I'm enjoying the opportunity to work with the elementary-age students and am quickly learning which authors and titles are popular with this fun and energetic group!
My husband, Joe, and I have lived and raised our two daughters in Edina for 24 years - actually he has lived here much longer as he graduated from Edina East! I grew up in Cedar Rapids, IA and graduated from Shattuck-St. Mary's and then from Gustavus. Our daughter Kelly graduated last May from the College of St. Benedict and is happily employed as a Youth Minister. Our daughter Lauren is a Global Business and French Major at the College of St. Benedict and is currently studying abroad in Cannes, France this semester. She is reveling in the opportunity to explore the country and language she grew to love while she was a student here at Normandale!
I'm happy to be spending time again in the Normandale hallways. Thanks for the warm welcome!
Kris Hayes
