Principal's Weekly
|
Dear Normandale Families,
We will start late on Wednesday, October 30. Classes will start at 10:30 a.m. Buses will pick-up at normal locations - only two hours later. Late-start days are new this year and our staff will use the additional time for professional growth and training. Our teachers will be meeting in their collaborative teams to review your students' data so far -and plan instruction going forward based on that review. All this supports our district's personalized learning.
A big congratulations goes to Brittany Montgomery, who has been promoted to Department Specialist in the district office. We will miss her smile and multitude of talents but applaud her career success and wish her the best.
Thank you for your support and partnership. I welcome your thoughts and emails and am grateful to be learning alongside your students.
Enjoy these sunny, warm fall days. (We're taking advantage of them with a third fire drill!)
My door is always open,
Gerry Lukaska

Please let the classroom teacher know that you are interested in retaking your child's picture. We will be visiting each classroom to escort these kids to the cameras.
Thank you!

Host Families Needed
|
Dear Normandale families,
The intern committee is sending out a request for four more host families for this coming spring. Despite having had enough families sign up during Rally Week, we've had an unusual number of families drop out this year.
The commitment for hosting is from mid-January 2014 until one week past the last day of school. You provide room and board for the intern and welcome them as part of your family.
We have a questionnaire that we ask each family to fill out, we do a home visit and we have an orientation. If you are willing and interested in opening your home to host one of your schools interns, please contact Kris or Anne to start the process. Thank you for your consideration. Our children, teachers and schools all benefit from having these interns within our community.
Thank you so much for considering this opportunity!

Parking Lot Safety
|
The Normandale office has received numerous calls recently from parents voicing concerns about the safety of our parking lot. The safety of our children is important to us and we would like the community to work together to follow the rules of our parking lot. Unfortunately, these are some of the issues that have been brought to our attention:
- A parent dropped a child off, was frustrated having to wait, honked the horn and peeled out (tires squealing) cutting everyone else off exiting the parking lot.
- Parents are parking in the pick-up lane, and walking to get their children instead of parking in the lot.
- Parents entering the pick-up lane line incorrectly via the roundabout, while others wait in the queue.
- Some parents driving at such a high speed that others were concerned for the safety of the children walking around.
Please be sure to follow the guidelines for parent drop-off and pick-up as noted under the section titled "Drop Off / Pick up" under the Quick Links on the Normandale homepage. There is also a link here to our traffic plan for those of you not familiar with the procedure. If a grandparent or someone not familiar with the parking lot rules is picking up your child, please review the routine with him or her.
Thank you for modeling good citizenship for our children by respecting these guidelines to ensure the safety of all students and families at Normandale!

Art Adventure!
|
Registration is open for Art Adventure!
Students in grades 3 - 5 are invited to participate in Art Adventure. This free program will be held seven times during the year, starting in November. There will be one program per month, taking place over the lunch hour (actually 45 minutes). Participants will learn about a work of art at each session while enjoying a brown bag lunch brought from home. A related art project will also be offered. Programs are led by parent volunteers.
About Art Adventure
Art Adventure is an art appreciation program for students in grades 3-5 based on original paintings, sculpture, textiles, and photographs from the collection at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This year theme is Sources of Strength.
How do you register your student? To sign up your student please fill in this form. Note that there is one tab per grade (at the bottom of the workbook).
Please note that because of fewer volunteer presenters this year we need to limit Art Adventure to 25 students per grade.

PTO Dues Reminder
|
When should I pay my dues?
The time is now. Did you know that until we get a majority of dues and fees paid we cannot give funds to classroom parents to plan parties? Right now about 50% of parents have paid their dues and fees which cover room parties, field trips, directories, staff development, the intern program and more. This also is your chance to order a yearbook.
Please make every effort to pay in a timely fashion so we can figure out finances for the year. To pay using PayPal click here. Or you can print off a dues form and put a check in the PTO Treasurer box in the front office.

Message from the Edina Education Fund:
Dear Fun Run Supporters,
Thanks so much for your support of our 3rd annual Hornet Hustle Fun(d) Run on Saturday September 28. Over 300 participants made it a huge success even among the rain drops! It was fun to see so many kids, parents, teachers and community members enjoying the outdoors and exercising together. Check out race photos here.
Thanks to the following corporate sponsors for their financial support: Anselmo Family, Logan Consulting, Twin Cities Orthopedics, Real Estate Simplified, Walser Foundation, Dentistry for Children & Adolescents, and Partners in Pediatrics.
The funds raised at this event will be used to support the Innovation Grants for the 2013-14 school year. Learn more about the Edina Education Fund and how we keep innovation and possibilities alive in Edina Public Schools.

Does your child need a refresher on adding pictures to a Google site? Wondering how to help your child with lattice multiplication? You can find the answers on ecademy! Students and parents can watch teacher-created screencasts on a variety of school-related subjects.
Ecademy is a district-wide initiative supported by the Edina Education Fund. It houses hundreds of teacher-created videos (screencasts) on a variety of subjects. More videos are added all the time, so make sure to check it out!
