Principal's Weekly

Dear Normandale Families,

Please keep these important events in mind for next week:

  • Thursday, Oct 3, at 6:30 p.m. there will be a meeting for 5th grade parents to discuss the Back-to-Back program;
  • Also next week, we will have our first lock-down drill. Teachers will be notified in advance and students will be prepared. If you would like to discuss this in more detail, please contact me.

I have to say it's been a very good three weeks for everyone at Normandale.

In August, our teachers committed to ensuring our students "make or exceed growth targets." And this week, all students in grades 3-5 have completed the first measure of those growth targets: MAP assessments in reading and math. Our students' scores will be available in late October and I'll notify you ASAP when you can view them in Schoolview.

Our meeting with Valley View teachers went well and here are a few things they shared about our students when they move from our school to a middle school:

  • "Frenchies" are less and less motivated to speak French in middle school which is understandable since our students move from immersion in 5th grade to simply extension in 6th grade.
  • Our students, however, go to middle school very prepared to speak French with a high degree of confidence.
  • There is a need to motivate students to perfect their oral skills with richer vocabulary, consistent application of grammar principles, and less mixing of English and French.

All in all, the meeting with Valley View teaching staff went well and they continue to be strong supporters of our program.

As always, my door is open to you,

Gerry Lukaska

 Social Work Services at Normandale

I am excited to be back for my seventh year at Normandale. It is great to re-connect with colleagues, families, and students. My main mission is to provide support for students so that they can find success in the academic, social, behavioral, and emotional realms that they operate in during the school day. Each year I am increasingly aware of the unique and beneficial aspects which the French Immersion setting provides our students. As I have been preparing lessons I have intentionally been incorporating elements which tie the learning of a second (or third) language into the more social, emotional, and behavioral content.

This year I have also enhanced my school website. It provides some specific information about the kind of work I do as well as some curriculum and videos which you can read (and print out) and watch. I also have included links to websites having to do with topics such as bullying. I encourage you to visit and also give me some ideas about what else you would like to see on it.

Please feel free to call or visit (and see my rapidly expanding collection of Parisian items)!

Press Release: Mme French-Amara Wins Award

Normandale Elementary School Art Program Ranks # 3 in the State
and # 61 in the Nation!

Gurnee, IL-- Leanne French-Amara, art teacher at Normandale Elementary School in Edina, Minnesota, deserves to take a step out of the art room and into the spotlight! French-Amara has been recognized by Artsonia - the world's largest online kid's art museum - for outstanding leadership in the area of Arts Education at Normandale Elementary School. The school's online art gallery ranks #3 in the state and #61 in the nation, according to Artsonia.

The Leadership Award presented to Leanne French-Amara honors teachers who go beyond the classroom walls to encourage family and community involvement in arts education. The award also recognizes significant achievement in the area of technology integration within the school arts program. State and nationwide rankings are based on specific criteria, which demonstrate both aspects of the Leadership Award.

While teachers in more than 100 countries showcase their student artwork on Artsonia, Leanne French-Amara has created a school community deserving of recognition. During the 2012-2013 school year, the Normandale Elementary School gallery showcased 5394 pieces of artwork. This popular collection of art has been visited more than 167360 times and has received 372 comments from friends and family. "Artsonia is a simple yet effective way to get parents and family members more involved in Art Education," said French-Amara, "and my students love it!"

In addition, family members can purchase keepsakes imprinted with the child's artwork, with Artsonia donating 20 percent of their annual product revenue back to the school art program.

Headquartered in Gurnee, IL, Artsonia is an online kid's art museum providing free, educational resources for kids, families and schools. Founded in 2000, Artsonia continues to integrate technology in the classroom, develop multi-cultural understanding through art and increase family involvement in children's education. New Staff Bio: Mlle Buck

Bonjour!

My name is Madeline Buck and I will be a classroom assistant in Mlle Thomas's class this year. I am excited to return to Normandale after the thirteen years since my 5th grade graduation. When I started kindergarten here, the school was only four years old!

I graduated from St. Olaf College in 2011, where I studied French and Nordic Studies. After graduating from St. Olaf I spent a year conducting research in Norway and a year working in Boston. I am now back in Minnesota, looking forward to again being part of the Normandale community, but this time on the teaching side!

Edina PCN presents: Executive Function
Organization, Problem Solving, & Motivation

Holly West Jones, MA will help us to understand executive function and its role in managing daily life and IQ. Knowing that each child develops at their own pace, sometimes these skills are called upon before a child has mastered that executive function skill.

* Learn what executive functions are and how they develop
* Understand learning from a developmental perspective
* Master how to address time management, motivation and persistence towards a long-term goal, academic organization, problem solving, emotional regulation and impulse control.
* Leave with effective tools to help your child/adolescent learn these important skills.
