This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

Would you employ an older person, if not, why?
  • Definitely would. Life Skills and solid work experience. Older workers generally have a better attitude to work and ethics.
  • Generally I have enjoyed employing older people. However, as the average age in our company is now 50 plus, we have to try and employ younger people because we really would not like all our staff retiring within a few years of one another.
  • Yes if he is a qualified tradesman. Reliable. Knows his job and has years of skills.
  • Over the years I have found the issue of employing people both frustrating and comical due to the attitudes, egos and lack of work ethics changing over the years. Also the age of entitlement rather than gratitude and respect for having a stable well paid job. I started in this industry in 1983, don't get me wrong, I talk from vast experience as like most I was an employee first (apprentice, then a tradesman), then a contractor and now for the past many years a business owner/employer. I find it difficult to find much respect for employers in all age groups only a unjustified, unrealistic view of their own self worth and demands for entitlements and unjustified pay packets for their lack of any real skills and limited abilities due to their over inflated egos. In answer to your question My current trusted and greatly appreciated workforce consists of both employees over 50 and younger generation. It doesn't matter whether they are older or younger all that matters is they they appreciate their position, work to the best of their abilities and show appreciation and respect their employer and the company they work for just as they demand their employer show them.
  • Yes, older employees don't "play mobile phones" during the work day and never show signs of Monday-itus. They have life skills in how to treat customers and other staff without any special training. They are grateful to be in a job and grew up in a time when knowing how to spell, ad up and have common sense existed. They may work slower but you NEVER need to go back and fix up the job.
  • Absolutely, we always welcome more experience to our business.
  • This is a difficult question. We would love to employ older people for their experience, etc., but we have to ask how would they fit in with our young work force, would they be welcome by the younger generation. We obviously want a united team and not a segregated team. Having said that if the right person (older) applied to fill a vacancy we may have, then in all probability we would take them on.
