This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Our last week's survey results...

Is there any way for newcomers to the industry to learn the requisite skills for the sign industry, other than TAFE courses and joining a sign company as a junior?

  • I started as a graphic designer and picked up skills from the guys i worked with for the past 10 years.
But as i don't have a sign-writers apprenticeship under my belt, l'm not classed as a real sign-writer in some of the Facebook groups. (Shane, Signarama Kew)

  • YES. Buy a signwave or signarama franchise and know it it all in 3 weeks
  • no and nor should there be this is a trade and trade qualifications should be the minimum required to operate in the trade. (Bruce, Budget Signs).
  • Why would you want another way than learning right at the source it beats all the courses and even Tafe.
Nothing better than having a good teacher or boss to teach you all tricks of the trade!
  • Depending on whether you need to train up a person as an apprentice or a trainee could determine this outcome. My investigations have shown up that in some instances, a trainee in graphic design, rather than an apprenticeship in Signwriting, could save a lot of hassles. Graphic design is a wide reaching Award and if you align with the right training provider, everything can be done on site. Sending the 'student' off to do training with Avery or whoever provides that 'hands on' component will negate a lot of work time being eaten in training too. Being a skill of practical application, learning is done through doing... (Work experience placements or internships are possibilities also, but know the legislation before going into these)
  • Who needs juniors when robots can do the lot. I'd rather have the money invested and less of the headache. Vista and outsourcing to China or India are the future of the sign industry.
  • Buy a Sign A Rama Franchise. You will be taught and mentored on how to run a successful sign business (Brian, Praetorian BMC)
  • Hope not, otherwise I wasted a lot of time learning the trade the old fashioned way.

Editor's note: - Thanks everybody for your feedback. It would seem the majority are recommending weekly, so that is what we will stick with.
Good survey questions need to come from the industry. Please send your suggestion for a good industry survey question to brian@wideformatonline.com - Thanks.

Smile: It's only Monday!

Two Glaswegians, Archie and Jimmy, are sitting in the pub discussing Jimmy's forthcoming wedding.
"Och, it's all goin' pure brilliant," says Jimmy.
"A've got everythin' organised awready, the flouers, the church,
the caurs, the reception, the rings, the minister, even ma stag night"
Archie nods approvingly.
"I've even bought a kilt to be married in!" continues Jimmy.
"A kilt?" exclaims Archie, "That's magic, you'll look pure smart in that.
Whit's the tartan?"
"Och," says Jimmy,
"A'd imagine she'll be in white"
