Our last week's survey results...
|
How do you cope with unwanted interruptions during the working day?
-
Being a small business it is not easy but we try not to be rude to the individuals who think that their reasons for interrupting are more important than the one you have chosen to concentrate on. Its a problem for all small business owners.
-
Easy, just shut the door, switch the phone off and that usually solves the problem.
-
I have a policy now that I don't answer my mobile if the number has been blocked or doesn't display. I let it go straight to message. The same applies if it is a number I don't immediately recognise. If I'm working on a project at the office that needs my full attention, I also divert all calls to a message bank stating I'm away from the phone etc... It works well and since developing the policy, I'm not disturbed by people who are tyre kickers or are not serious about contacting me. I got to the stage that I wasn't getting any work done during office hours, however now I'm more productive, and I return all calls before close of trade the same day. I've only ever had one negative complaint and that was from someone looking for a favour. Most people expect a service industry to be busy and leaving a message isn't such a bad call. The key is to return the calls the same day.
-
How do you know what is an 'unwanted interruption' with out asking the question. It might be a new customer wanting a $10000.00 sign or some moron tyre kicker who wants to put the f word on the back window of his hoon car. You can cope by growing your business to have staff that shield you and field issues. But that can be problematic and produces its own problems of a larger payroll and 'unwanted interruptions' of them then interrupting to ask questions that have to be answered to make/sell more product to turnover more money to pay ever increasing overheads. To cope, just do what is the buzz thing now. Suffer from stress issues. Personally I just haven't got time. (Barry, Scott Signs)
-
Its part of being in business, especially for us small guys, so get used to it.
-
Its best to have a co-worker who can block the interruptions and also warn you that the interruption is worth investigating.

Smile: It's only Monday!
A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he'd make a deal with his son,"You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car." The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. After about six weeks his father said,"Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut."The boy said,"You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that:- Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair." (You're going to love the Dad's reply!) "Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went?"
