This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

How important is it to offer "green" print options these days?

Our last week's survey results...

Have you had any success in importing products directly and bypassing local suppliers?

  • yes regularly. I have sourced some supplies at one tenth the price available here. Machinery is a gamble however as if there is no agent despite all the promises in the world. You might as well buy a boat anchor and if there is an agent they dont want to know you. Tread carefully but for some inputs I cannot understand why large companies in particular pay over4the top for readily available items from OS. I suspect that eventually as industry shrinks that those that survive will be forced to import.
  • Yes and no - its a risk you take. Have imported a few things most are good, but if you have an issue there is no comeback.
  • Yes with a number of different products. However we spent years searching for and testing a wide range of products before committing to our own range.
  • I dont try, I realise many suppliers are importing from overseas. But as far as printing goes, I design and print myself or seek out local print suppliers whenever possible. It is about time more local businesses supported other local businesses. Manufacturing in Australia is suffering at the hands of cheap overseas labour and importers.
  • Some time ago we were being "squeezed" on a big job for price, so decided to get a set of inks from China to assist the profit line. Never again! We made sure the firm had the right colours, transferred the money, then the next day we got an email to say 3 of the cartridges were out of stock and what did we want to replace them with.
It would never have worked on an ongoing basis, as they would not put the order aside while the money was transferred overnight, and we would have ended up with lots of some colours and nothing of another.
We also decided it was more important to keep local suppliers in business, and have concentrated on building good relationships with our suppliers.
  • Yes import teardrop flags, printer ink, vinyl cutter accessories (blades, cutter strips & squeegees etc.). With the access to Alibaba like websites it makes life so much easier than 10 years ago when I started looking at importing from overseas.
  • Yes
  • Defnitaly No, I support local bussineses. As long as I don't feel I am being ripped off, I will support local businesses and as long as they are supporting me.
  • Ink in particular is a good example and it has been said many times, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. The consequences of buying cheap ink can be disastrous but that does not mean they are all bad, there are some good inks out there that will save you lots of money and do the same job as the OEM inks. Some of the better ones have local distributors which helps but I assume they are putting a mark up on the same inks that you can bring in yourself.

(As a publishing practice to protect ourselves from any potential liability, company and individual names that are referred to negatively in any of these comments are removed.

Smile: It's only Monday!

Helen Clarke, Prime Minister of New Zulland, is rudely awoken at 4am by the telephone.

"Hillen, its the Hilth Munister here. Sorry to bother you at this hour but there is an emergency! I've just received word thet the Durex fectory en Auckland has burned to the ground. It is istimated thet the entire New Zulland supply of condoms will be gone by the ind of the week."

PM: "Shut - the economy wull niver be able to cope with all those unwanted babies - wi'll be ruined!"

Hilth Munister: "We're going to hef to shup some in from abroad... Brutain?..."

PM: "No chence!! The Poms will have a field day on thus one!"

Hilth Munister: "What about Australia?"

PM: "Maybe - but we don't want them to know thet we are stuck."

Hilth Munister: "You call John Howard - tell hum we need one moollion condoms; ten enches long and eight enches thuck! That way they'll know how bug the Kiwis really are!!"

Helen calls John, who agrees to help the Kiwis out in their hour of need.

Three days later a plane arrives in Auckland - full of boxes.

A delighted Hillen rushes out to open the boxes. She finds condoms; 10 unches long; 8 unches thuck, all coloured green and gold. She then notices in small writing on each and ivery one.........
