What is the biggest technological issue you face in wide format printing?
| |
Our last week's survey results...
|
Given the uptake of water based inks for the printing of jobs that were previously only done by true solvent and eco solvent printing, do you believe that solvent and eco solvent have a future?
- I so wanted it to be true now that HP have sorted out many of the early issues with latex. We've been running a total 6 Seikos for the past 10 years, with correct maintenance they have been bulletproof and the colours are stunning. Correct dry time of prints can sometimes be an issue though, every job's urgent. So we asked one of HP's biggest resellers to print us some big blocks of solid colour (C,M,Y,K, red, reflex, green etc.) on their best polymeric vinyl. These simple colours are typical of what we print daily, they need to be good. To get the instant dry time advantage of Latex we would have been happy with colour similar to say a Roland or Epson ecosolvent.
When the samples were delivered we just about fell over laughing. The woeful latex colours would cost us at least 50% of our corporate client's work overnight if latex was all we had. It's a shame, I really wanted it to be true. - I have a water based ink printer, eco solvent printers and a latex printer in my shop. Each has a role in the modern sign shop, and I suspect they will for some time yet. It really depends on the market you pursue. (Shane - Drew's Sign It)
- I don't think water-based inks will ever be as effective as solvent or Eco-solvent inks for some substrates and end products.
- Yes, why not.
- Everything has a future if it is still here tomorrow but solvent ink use will decline in favour of UV curing in particular. There is solvent UV but it is very small. Government directives, customer 'green' credentials and OH&S are the 3 main drivers in reductions of VOC type solvents. Jobs where solvent is the only real solution will be increasingly monitored and solvent recovery programmes will be needed if not already.
- The big Japanese wide format manufacturers (Roland, Epson, Mimaki and Mutoh) have obviously looked at this question and concluded that solvent and eco solvent still have a bright future. Latex has a role but not for everything although the advantages are considerable. With more research into the inks maybe it will be possible for further improvement... who knows?

A man goes to the doctor and says, "Doctor, wherever I touch, it hurts." The doctor asks, "What do you mean?" The man says, "When I touch my shoulder, it really hurts." Man say: If I touch my knee - OUCH! When I touch my forehead, it really, really hurts. The doctor says, "I know what's wrong with you - you've broken your finger!"
