Surveys/Classified ads and more

30th March 2015

This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Our last survey results...

Would you be open to merger, acquisition or partnership agreements?

  • Yes with the right company two heads are better than one even if they are Fish Heads we have been doing this since 1987 but still don't know it all. (Gary, Studioline)
  • I would be very careful. I bought into a family business once and once the honeymoon was over and they had my money, they played some terrible tricks in order to make me want to get out. I eventually took them to court and won.
  • That's a dicey question. I know two separate signwriters who did agree to something of that ilk, such that they stayed on staff for 'X' amount of time, like 2 years or more, minimum. Within about 6 weeks, each of the the 'new bosses' had sacked each one.
They had started their businesses from scratch, and suddenly, unexpectedly found themselves out of a job, and no business either. It was not funny.
Sure, I'd be happy with a merger etc, as long as I had to work less, and made 5 times as much...
If I had to work more, and gained no more, then what is the point? -unless I was about to retire, and just wanted to get out of the industry.
'Partnership' agreements - I've watched many of them, and they've all ended up being horribly one-sided.
The lazy person ends up with the bulk of the money, and the motivated person wonders why he ever let himself get conned. It would take a special pair to make it work... (Ian, Traditional Signs)
    .

  • Absolutely yes.
  • My business is not big enough to merge but maybe a partnership, but there is a degree of trust involved and that would be paramount before anything happened.
  • Yes - I find mergers or acquisitions are a great way to capture a larger market share, to expand and manage growth as long as it is financially viable and the debt required for the acquisition is serviceable. (Steve, Steve Baker Signs)
  • yes very much so, I think that it is a great way to progress like minded businesses.
This would be a natural progression for business both small and midsize to grow, and use the skills and tools of each other. So very much open to discussions. (Mark, Vivid print Services)
  • I am always on the look out for opportunities to expand / purchase an existing business / businesses that have growth potential.
  • Absolutely. All propositions are looked at and considered
  • It would not be worth it unless there would be a profit in it for me and my staff. So many of these deals leave you poorer and stressed out by the tensions that can exist after the honeymoon is over.
  • There's many benefits in merging or partnering in terms of greatly reducing overheads and gaining efficiency, but there's often a conflict in interests and decision making clashes between two parties who are used to having 100% control. On the other hand we'd be open to making acquisitions or being acquired for the right terms.
  • Yes for merger or aquisition if the deal is right, interested in what valuation methods and earning multiples sign businesses are using to determine the value of the hunter and the prey. .

The Freezing Homeless Child! (Social Experiment)
The Freezing Homeless Child! (Social Experiment)
Smile!

POTATO GIRL
Well, a Girl Potato and Boy Potato had eyes for each other, and finally they got married, and had a little sweet potato, which they called 'Yam'. Of course, they wanted the best for Yam.
When it was time, they told her about the facts of life. They warned her about going out and getting half-baked, so she wouldn't get accidentally mashed, and get a bad name for herself like 'Hot Potato'.
Yam said not to worry, no Spud would get her into the sack and make a rotten potato out of her! But on the other hand she wouldn't stay home and become a Couch Potato either. She would eat properly so as not to be skinny like her Shoestring Cousins.
When she went off to Europe, Mr. And Mrs. Potato told Yam to watch out for those hard-boiled guys from Ireland and the greasy guys from France called the French Fries, and when she went out West, she must watch out for the Indians so she wouldn't get scalloped.
They sent Yam to Idaho P.U. (that's Potato University). So that when she graduated she'd really be "in the Chips". But in spite of all they did for her, one-day Yam came home and announced she was going to marry Richie Benaud.
"Richie Benaud!!!!", they cried.
They were very upset and told Yam "You can't possibly marry Richie Benaud because he's just ..........
Are you ready for this? Are you sure? * OK! You asked for it: Here it is! * * * ... just a COMMONTATER!"
