This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Our last survey results...

Do you think that the quality and expertise in the production of signage is where it should be in Australia and New Zealand? If not, where do you think we need improving.

  • In my opinion our signage is up there with the best of them. In fact haven;t we won some international awards?

  • No. While we were installing a job a competitor was doing a job down the main street from us. We had quoted the job they were doing but missed out. Competitor obviously had no idea (ie no barricading, working 2.9m high without right equipment, the list goes on...) and started gluing (wrong adhesive) CNC letters as the rain started to pour. The next day most of the letters have slid at various amounts and stuck. Quality and expertise are lacking, but it is not just in the sign industry. First improvement is stop worrying about how much money we will earn and start caring about the work we do.

  • Proud of our work and would be pleased to put it up against any in the world.

  • I observe that our standard of signage is lower than elsewhere in the world. While we have well-trained signwriters for the most part, I attribute this to to less availability/higher cost of some materials eg HDU, Signply, honeycomb ACP, foams. There is an absence of wholesale suppliers for products such as monument signs, pylon signs, and solid or fabricated channel lettering that are readily available in the USA.

  • You should be trade qualified to manufacure, produce, design, & install signs. You need trade quals to be a haidresser, plumber or builder etc.
I've been in this industry for 30years,so sick of seeing all the common mistakes made be people who claim to be signwriters(computer jockies) it's bringing our skilled art & digital technology down.
I do agree that there are a lot of talened people who do work in our industry really well without a trade, but there's a huge crowd who still can't spell & hang letters upside down! 'S' has to be my pet hate, followed closely by poor kerning & spelling errors!

  • I suppose there is always room for improvement but that goes for all signies in the world, not just us.

(As a publishing practice to protect ourselves from any potential liability, company and individual names that are referred to negatively in any of these comments are removed)

The Most Bizarre Mutations In Animals
The Most Bizarre Mutations In Animals
Smile!

The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.
Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, "Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?"
The Lone Ranger replies, "I see millions of stars."
"What that tell you?" asked Tonto.
The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, "Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, the Lord is all powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What's it tell YOU, Tonto?"
"You dumber than buffalo. Someone stole tent."
