This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Our last survey results...

With the Aussie $ sinking, prices are going up for imported goods. Are you passing on the increases?

  • Its a no brainer really you have to, if your input cost rise you must retain margin to survive and remain profitable

  • of course we do. we have to make money so we quote according to our cost and margin profit.

  • Already done. 5 - 10% increase to all of our prices. (Tom, The Sign Place, Maitland)

  • You would be Mad not too, you are only decreasing your own profit if you don't...We monitor all supplier prices each time we enter a purchase into our accounting program. If the new price is dearer then we update the system with the new price - therefor we are minimizing potential profit decreases due to material increase. If you are already receiving increase notifications then now would be a good time for discussions/negotiations on your main materials with other suppliers.... You may be surprised at the results.. (Steve, Steve Baker Signs)

  • This is one of the great questions in business, of course you have to pass on the increases, but wait for it.... DO THE PRICES OF THESE IMPORTED GOODS
COME DOWN IN PRICE WHEN THE AUSSIE DOLLAR CLIMBS
BACK UP - I THINK NOT!!!

  • Short answer is no. The majority of our costs are local - production wages, fixed overheads, etc. The falling $ has started to show a trend away from imports towards local printing in our business. It's only a dribble at this stage but it's definitely started. (Mark, EziTag Systems)

  • Of course you do, that is if you want to stay in business.

  • I suppose it depends on what proportion of the materials you use are imported and has the supplier increased his/her prices. Probably yes, so you have to pass that on. Make sure your estimating system is showing new pricing from your suppliers otherwise you will be losing money.

(As a publishing practice to protect ourselves from any potential liability, company and individual names that are referred to negatively in any of these comments are removed)

Best Of Funny Talking Animals

Smile!

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.
My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60.
Now he's 97 years old and we don't know where he is.
The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.
I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing..
I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks.
Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.
Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise', I wash my mouth out with chocolate.
The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they'll say,
'Well, she looks good doesn't she.'
If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.
I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years,...... just getting over the hill.
We all get heavier as we get older,
because there's a lot more information in our heads.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Every time I start thinking too much about how I look,
I just find a Happy Hour and by the time I leave,
I look just fine.
