This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

Cashflow management can be very difficult to manage, especially over the holiday period. What do you do to make sure that you have sufficient cash to pay the wages, creditors, rent and etc?

  • Manage debtors as best we can in lead up to Christmas. Arrange for as many as possible of annual payments (Veh Rego, Insur Prems) to be outside of the March Qtr. We find that the lack of sales and lag in debtor payments creates a strain in months after Christmas. (Gary Adams, Scotchline Rocklea)

  • Think about which bridge I should jump off as account balance approaches zero.
  • We set aside funds for the rest of the year in anticipation of 2 low turnover months.

  • There is no doubt Cash flow is King, We have been very careful this year about spending during the busy period so that we have the funds to break over Christmas.
Make sure you track your sales each month and compare to last year so you can GUESS what $$$ are coming in next month. Knowing your highs and lows will help you enjoy your time off properly.

  • We all know that The Christmas period comes at the same time every year and for many is a very busy and stressful time. So forward planning for this period should begin at the very latest by 1st October. If you work through this period there should be no nasty surprises and it should be business as usual, however every business should already be aware of the costs and expenses associated with this period. If you close, take annual leave for this period remember you are not alone, many of your clients also close so your forward planning should include outstanding account recovery. You should be pushing to get most or as many account payments in by the time you close to enable a healthy bank balance to cover all employee wages and associated expenses for this period. It would also help if possible to ensure that you have your own account purchases finalized and paid for by the time you leave. This way you know everything is covered. If you are unable to pay your suppliers before you leave make sure that you contact them and advise them of when you will be returning and that you will be in a position to deal with their payments at that time. If you have the capability and are worried about cash flow then consider paying your purchasing accounts for this period by Credit card before you leave and your suppliers close - this gives you another 30 days to pay them off and the added benefit of great frequent flyer points...
Good luck with your planning and have a fantastic Christmas. (Steve Baker, Steve Baker Signs)..

  • We put money aside, like all good businesses should.

  • If we look after the staff and creditors not just at Christmas time but throughout the year, we expect them to look after us. I know it doesn't always happen like that but in a perfect world that is the way business works That is also how you keep good staff.. We save like crazy for the end of the year.

SURPRISE WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
SURPRISE WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Smile!

SNORING
The guys were on a bike tour. No one wanted to room with Mick, because he snored so badly. They decided it wasn't fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to take turns.
The first guy slept with Mick and comes to breakfast the next morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? He said, "Mick snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night."
The next night it was a different guy's turn. In the morning, same thing, hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? You look awful! He said, 'Man, that Mick shakes the roof with his snoring. I watched him all night."
The third night was Bill's turn. He was a tanned, older and a man's man.. The next morning he came to breakfast bright-eyed and bushy-tailed."Good morn-ing!" he said. They couldn't believe it.. They said, "Man, what happened?"
He said, "Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Mick into bed, patted him on the arse, and kissed him good night on the lips. Mick sat up and watched me all night."With age comes wisdom.
