This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

Are you struggling to find suitable qualified staff?

  • Yes, but "trained" staff isn't necessarily any better - depends on the type of equipment involved, processes, etc. Designers are "trained" to draw up a pretty logo for a business card or website but don't seem to learn much about scale, tradesmen/women seem to learn nothing about the machinery and methods used in a normal current signshop and sales/service people also have a huge learning curve even if they've come from the printing industry. Good steady staff are a huge asset.

  • We always have a need for more vehicle wrap specialists. We have had an open position now for a few months. Even once you have found someone it still takes time and effort to make sure they have been properly trained. The industry needs to put more effort in ensuring it helps train up more qualified (certified) staff and give them the right experience. (Phil, Liberty Signs)

  • Definitely, we're not in a capital city and can advertise for months without receiving an application from a qualified signwriter

  • Definitely try finding a good screenprinter. We are a dieing breed. Teaching young blokes these days just as hard as finding a qualified screenprinter!

  • I find this questions ties in perfectly with the last question - What do we consider to be qualified staff in this current era? I can honestly say that my definition of a "Qualified Tradesman or person" would be well above the level of qualifications many in this industry believe they require to be "Qualified". Maybe it is time this industry became regulated and a graded ability level system put in place much like in many manufacturing industries, ie: assembler A, Assembler B, Vinyl applicator, Tradesman, etc, etc....Then as employers we can remunerate our team based on their true knowledge and "Graded" ability rather than a person qualifying them selves as a Qualified Person not being able to supply any qualifications....In answer to the question...YES it is difficult & hard to find real "Qualified" people as there are very few actual real qualified people left in this industry..... (Steve Baker, Steven Baker Signs)

  • You Betcha, when I use Seek and other online services, all I get are foreigners, mainly Asians looking for way to get into Australia. I want to employ Aussies. To get a good employee is like looking for diamonds, when you get one you really have to look after him/her.

  • Yes, we know the number of apprentices is slowly increasing but will it ever be enough? I doubt it. We need to give more thought on how to.solve this problem - just increasing the number of apprentices is not the answer.

What Would You Do? Food Stamps Single Mother Of 4 Children Can't Afford Food!
Smile!

This is the best example for paying attention that I have everheard.
First-year students at the Purdue Vet School were attending their first anatomy class with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet.
The professor started the class by telling them, "In Veterinary medicine it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor.
The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the animal's body." For an example, the professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the rear of the cow, withdrew it, and stuck his finger in his mouth.
"Go ahead and do the same thing," he told his students. The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes, but eventually took turns sticking a finger in the rear of the dead cow and sucking on it.
When everyone finished, the Professor looked at them and said, "The second most important quality is observation. I stuck in my middle finger and sucked on my index finger. Now learn to pay attention.
Life's tough but it's even tougher if you're stupid.
