This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

Do you believe the current qualifications in the Sign, Printing and Graphics Arts industry are an accurate reflection of the required skills and knowledge?

  • Probably not any more, I believe having the correct qualifications is important and it will be challenge to the guy who has to figure it out, such is the diversity of the Signwriting trade.
  • NO, anyone can buy a sign program & call themselves a signmaker. It breaks my heart to see the way the sign industry has gone of late, sign makers (not signwriters) are on about the same rung of the ladder as a used car salesman (Lance, Grafton SignArt)
  • What qualifications, Some people just buy equipment & call them selves signwriters/tradesman/professionals, These people are giving all the people who love our industry a black eye & we need to make sure we regulate our own industry before the cowboys ruin it for everyone.
  • "Current qualifications"...I have no idea what the current qualifications actually are.
We had an apprentice we took in 17-18 years ago, (she had done 2 years at TAFE/Tech so just needed the 2 years expereince in the field to finish) and she was terrific, except that she was told that as far as gilding goes, it would be unlikely she'd ever do any, and a piece the size of a matchbox was all they did in tech.
Also, She was told that CNC was the way of the future, and cutting letters by hand on a bandsaw, jigsaw, or with a hand router was archaic.
Well in her first week here, we went through 3 books of gold leaf, and spend a week hand cutting & routing assorted letters in Weathertex and hardwood for jobs we had on at the time.
Fortunately, her brush skills were excellent, and she was a great asset to us. Later she married, and her boyfriend/fiance/husband wanted her to stop painting. That was a sad loss for the industry.
However it did concern me a little then that she was being told or taught that certain skills were 'not current' and therefore obsolete, and those very skills were what has kept us going for 30 years..
So, whatever is current today in the teaching world, I have no idea, but I can say "Thank heavens for Letterheads" to keep up the interest and knowledge sharing in the classical aspects of the industry, if that is where the current teaching system is failing us..
(no offense intended by any of those statements) (Ian, Traditional Signs).
  • No. This industry is more than the talent to make signs, it's also about communication within the Sign Shop, Product Knowledge, Customer Service, Customer communication, sales and eithics in offering the right product. These skills have to be retaught tto their staffo every new bunch of young people entering the industry.
Product knowledge can come from suppliers offering product training for their good customers new staff. But the Sign Shop must be prepared to devote this development time to their staff members professional development. (Brian Pretorius, Praetorian BMC)
  • In such a varied industry there is always going to be some disparity, but I think the signwriting qualifications are a fair reflection of the skills of a general signwriter. With so many unqualified people trading as "signwriters", it's another story whether the qualifications actually mean anything.
  • No!
  • The industry is too diversified to have one qualification, it needs to be broken up for the various skill requirements and certificates given for each sector.

Smile!

Baboons
The English language has some wonderfully
anthropomorphic collective nouns for the various groups of animals.
Now consider a group of Baboons. They are the
loudest, most dangerous, most obnoxious, most
viciously aggressive and least Intelligent of all pri-mates.........And what is the proper collective noun for a group of baboons? Believe it or not ... A Parliament YEP....A PARLIAMENT OF BABOONS!
Pretty much explains everything doesn't it?
