This week's survey

(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

What are the qualities that you look for in suppliers and their sales reps? Would these be enough to keep you loyal or is it just about the brands and products themselves?

  • That they actually know the ins and outs, not just the ins, of the products they sell.

I had an expensive redo of a job when I ran out of a certain product and the supplier's sales rep turned up and handed me a bottle of something like I requested, but the bottle looked a bit different, and had a mildly different label with one word being not the same.
Naturally suspicious, I asked about it, to be told " That's just a new label, it's still the same product!"
    NOT!
Chemically it was significantly different and the banner I used it on exhibited horrible cissing all over.
After contacting the manifacturer, I was told that my suspicions were correct and the product had changed quite a bit.l
I of course had to swallow the mess and make a new banner, buit it was an ordeal I'd rather not have done.
Similarly I was offered a new product on the basis that "It's exactly the same as..." by the hapless sales rep. a couple of years earlier - yet the new product, despite all precautions, failed to adhere to the substrate. My loss in redoing three signs, I suppose, because I am a mug for trusting what the sales rep said...
Loyalty is about lots of things, but product knowledge in what is will NOT do, (its limitations) is as important as the blurb about its features.
I come from a corner of the industry and a corner of the country also where signs are expected to 'last forever' metaphorically speaking, and the long term durability or longevity of many more modern digital products is simply dreadful - again, encouraging my suspicions when told how good some new product is, by the rep.
I'm loyal to those from whom I've had the fewest disasters... but supplier product changes without proper knowledge or reason put me on guard. (Traditional Signs, Ian)

  • Relationships with your suppliers is as important as those you have with your clients. What I look for in my suppliers is integrity, value for money, trust, honesty, reliability, willingness to assist and an organisation that stand by their product. At the end of the day price is a factor however it is not the be all and end all (Steve Baker Signs - Steve Baker)

  • Quality Products, Fast delivery and Good stock levels

  • The products these days are all good for the purposes that your correctly using them for.The most important issue is the continuing service to the clients and naturally the price of the goods so we can have that competitive edge.

  • Who I buy from depends on a number of factors.

    (A) The actual products they sell must be brand names I am familiar with.
    (B) Price is important but not to the extent that I would buy a shonky product.
    (C) The supplier must be reliable.
    (D) The supplier won't get my business if they think I'm an idiot who will pay some outrageous price for a product that I can get elsewhere for a fraction of the price they are asking. (I does happen)
    (D) I won't cop it if the supplier continually ups the price and doesn't think I will notice.
    (E) It certainly does help if I like the rep. There are those that I haven't "clicked" with and I'm reluctant to buy from them.
Through the years being able to get along with the rep and feel we have a "personal" relationship has been a big factor in where I buy from.

  • Product knowledge, industry knowledge, easy-going, minimal pressure (no matter how hard you try, we aren't going to buy 10 rolls of some product just because you have it on sale), understanding of service levels and respect for time. Quite a list - no wonder nearly everyone gets it wrong! And yes, these are definitely "enough" to keep us loyal provided that pricing isn't ridiculous. Brand and products are important, but a good rep is a huge asset to both the customer and the company they are with.

  • Good pricing, good delivery times, good accounting procedures and knowledgable reps. Support also when it is required is vital for capital equipment.

(As a publishing practice to protect ourselves from any potential liability, company and individual names that are referred to negatively in any of these comments are removed)

 Seniors Banking... PRICELESS!!

Shown below, is an actual letter that was sent to a bank by an 86 year old woman.
The bank manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in the Times.

Dear Sir:

I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with which I endeavoured to pay my plumber
last month.

By my calculations, three nanoseconds must have elapsed between his presenting the cheque
and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honor it..

I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my entire pension, an arrangement which,
I admit, has been in place for only eight years.

You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting
my account £30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.

My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my
errant financial ways. I noticed that whereas I personally answer your telephone calls and letters,
--- when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, per-recorded,
faceless entity which your bank has become.

From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person.

My mortgage and loan repayments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will
arrive at your bank, by cheque, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your
bank whom you must nominate.

Be aware that it is an OFFENCE under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope.

Please find attached an Application Contact which I require your chosen employee to complete.
I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank
knows about me, there is no alternative.

Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Notary Public
figure, and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities)
must be accompanied by documented proof.

In due course, at MY convenience, I will issue your employee with a PIN number which he/she
must quote in dealings with me.

I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modelled it on the number
of button presses required of me to access my account balance on your phone bank service.

As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Let me level the playing field even further.

When you call me, press buttons as follows:

IMMEDIATELY AFTER DIALING, PRESS THE STAR (*) BUTTON FOR ENGLISH
#1. To make an appointment to see me

#2. To query a missing payment.

#3. To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there.

#4 To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping.

#5. To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature.

#6. To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home.

#7. To leave a message on my computer, a password to access my computer is required.
Password will be communicated to you at a later date to that Authorized Contact mentioned earlier.

#8. To return to the main menu and to listen to options 1 to 9

#9. To make a general complaint or inquiry.

The contact will then be put on hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service.
While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the duration of the call.

Regrettably, but again following your example, I must also levy an establishment fee to cover
the setting up of this new arrangement.

May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly less prosperous New Year?

Your Humble Client.

And remember:

Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off.
