Last week's survey results...

Would you expect a supplier to continue to supply the relevant inks and parts after the supplier discontinues with that product line but has installed several machines into the market?


 

  • Of course! How else would you be expected to source the products. Silly question.

  • Yes. If they have any shred of decency. The old saying "stand behind your product' to me is important, even if they have a tantrum and change their products - they ought to still support those who had faith in them to begin with. (Traditional Signs, Ian) 

  • The trade practices act should dictate that supplies and equipment spare parts be available for years after sale/ purchase of equipment. However manufacturers and not suppliers are the ones that are to be held accountable for this as they dictate in most cases who sells their equipment, irrespective of whether or not they are manufacturing it any longer.

  • To have supplies and support for the anticipated economic life cycle of the machine is a realistic expectation.

  • There is a requirement to support equipment for 5 years after the last unit is sold or it is discontinued. Reputable vendors will abide by this ie Xerox, Ricoh, Epson, HP etc.  A reseller can say what they like but it is the OEM that controls what will happen so you must look at who that is. Happy Flower Printing Company may make great cheap equipment but their local reseller can't guarantee your support in 5 years time. There is also a requirement to repair in an appropriate time frame so whilst a supplier may claim to have access to parts if it takes them 4 weeks to fly parts in is this acceptable !

  • Will always be a risk if you don't purchase a well known brand, just read the used equipment for sale column, it can be quite informative (Legible Signs, Gordon)

  • My word they should continue to support any machine they manufacture for what can be seen as its life. If a non OEM supplier is selling a competing ink the manufacturer bleets. So show the same support for the end user as you expect from them.

  • Yes I believe the supplier MUST continue to service, maintain, and supply ALL PARTS, INKS & CONSUMEABLE components for some time (I believe between 5-10 years). We as a company are unfoortunately in this predicament with our UV flat bed printer, we were advised that the company is no longer making the machine but will continue supplying inks and parts for 5 years after the notification - This has given our machine an un expected early expiry date requiring us to put in place a strategy requiring us to invest in highly over expensive machinery before time. I would be interested in the legal requirements of the supplier if anyone knows? (Steve Baker Signs Pty Ltd, Steve Baker).
  • Of course they should.

  • Yes, for three to five years.

"Hmmm," her husband said, not looking up from his magazine. Teasing him, Sarah said, "Would you swap me for a season ticket?" "Absolutely not," he said. "How sweet," Sarah said. "Tell me why not." "Season's more than half over", he said.
