This week's survey

(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

Most of the signage suppliers now have prices on their websites which are trade prices, anyone can access these websites and discover trade pricing. Does the public need to know the costs involved in making signage. Does anyone else feel this way?

  • Yes it is annoying. No need for public to know. A lot of suppliers require you to log in to get their prices. Another area that gripes me are some safety sign & Braille suppliers not having trade prices

  • You can buy vinyl on eBay, but most public would not know where else to buy without "Googling". GOOD suppliers don't have the trade pricing open to the public. They may have retail prices visible, but the trade prices should available only with a log-in.

  • The public do not need to know pricing of media, why would anyone even contemplate such a move. Knowing just the pricing of the media is a detrimental move as it doesn't take into account any other costs in producing a job or the overall running of the business so all the public will see is what simply looks like all profit when compared to the retail price.

  • I'm not a fan of the suppliers showing trade pricing on their web sites that anyone can see. it can give false value to "our" potential customers who don't consider our administrative costs, freight, stocking, profit margins etc. Better practice would be to have a trade log in page to access the pricing area.

  • Clearly the answer is no. The public has no need to know this information. A true trade supplier should keep this information to the trade. Our profitability has already taken a hit as a result of  "............" s supposedly Trade Only prices that the marketplace takes as retail prices now; we don't need anymore hits like this.

  • The cost of making signage? Materials are approx. 24% - 30% of the final cost of manufacture of most signs. Labour/shop costs still being the biggest part. Probably not a good idea to advertise prices on websites though, "prices a subject to change" availability, freight, account holder discount ( yeah right? ) How many suppliers selling products to Public for Trade prices these days?

I get customers who buy full rolls of vehicle wrap come in and want us to apply it, not a good thing at all.

  • A BIG NO! The public should not know the suppliers prices. That can and will cause problems if clients start to check and work out your profit etc. It was for this very reason that most sign companies boycotted The Banner Shop. They kept on publishing prices which they said were wholesale and separate retail but in the long run they lost a lot of trade. No suppliers prices should NOT be published for everyone to see. (PRAETORIAN BMC, Brian Pretorius)

  • These are TRADE ONLY prices and should not be for general public. In actual fact Joe Public can buy from our suppliers at these prices!! They only want the money and are lying if they say any different. I mark my mats. up 50% as its the only way to stay in business as I buy a rolls and keep stock. A little bit like all other retail businesses in the bloody WORLD !!

If suppliers are genuinely wholesale only they would be honest and only give access to tradies.
It shows the suppliers dishonesty if they do not do this. I know we get other discounts, mine is a whopping 10% and not enough to make a living. Give me a break!! if they were genuine we would put in our code and have a realistic figure as a trade price. As it stands Joey Public can almost get the same rate. Totally hopeless in my opin.

  • Are we discussing Wholesalers, Industry Supply Companies or genuine Sign Manufacturers. If either of the first 2 are advertising or selling direct to the public at the same rate as they sell to sign manufacturers then we as an industry have major issues here. Whilst I welcome competition in the market place I do not condone practices that are detrimental to the profitablilty of the industry. By allowing the general public to purchase or be available to view the prices that are charged to actual sign manufacturers is undermining the industry and should not be tolerated. (Steve Baker Signs Pty Ltd., Steve Baker)

  • obviously suppliers will now gain a slice of the retail pie, not sure that is fair!! wholesalers used to forward any retail enquiries to an outlet they supplied in the relevant area, not any more!! (legible signs, Gordon Young)

  • Personally I'd prefer it if the prices we only accessible to registered and verified tradespeople.

(As a publishing practice to protect ourselves from any potential liability, company and individual names that are referred to negatively in any of these comments are removed)

Management lesson

Johnny wanted to have sex with a girl in his office,
But she dated someone else...One day, Johnny got so frustrated that he went up to her and said,
'I'll give you a $100 if you let me have sex with you.
But the girl said NO. Johnny said, 'I'll be fast. I'll throw the money on the floor, you bend down, and I'll be finished by the time you pick it up. 'She thought for a moment and said that she would have to consult her boyfriend...
So she called her boyfriend and told him the story. Her boyfriend says, 'Ask him for $200,
and pick up the money very fast, he won't even be able to get his pants down. 'So she agrees and accepts the proposal.
Half an hour goes by, and the boyfriend is waiting for his girlfriend to call.
Finally, after 45 minutes, the boyfriend calls and asks what happened.
She responded, 'The bastard used coins!'

Management lesson:
Always consider a business proposal in its entirety before agreeing to it and getting screwed!
