• Do you use samples (like print media) from suppliers on paying jobs? Do you think wholesalers should offer a minimum 5 metre sample roll when a new product is released to the market?

• Yes I do use a sample on a real job, and yes I do think suppliers need to offer a decent sample when a new product is released. I'm more inclined to stay with a known and proven product rather than try something new if I'm expected to buy a full roll and have faith in the sale spiel. 3M supplied a suitable sample on the IJ35c/laminate and I was impressed I'll buy some now that I have given it a good application test.

• From a distributor's point of view...In answer to question one - I'm sure it goes on and in fact some customers will tell me they are waiting for a job to see how it performs out in the field. I don't mind if they are up front about it but my only issues are 1. How long will it take before they decide to use it? (3-5 yrs?) and 2. If it's good enough to do a job with and then charge a customer - why don't they just buy a roll?

  Question 2 is interesting. Yes I believe the distributor should make 5m samples available but not for every product in the range and not for everyone that asks for it.

  Samples cost a lot of money. Even if you carry a large international brand and they give out free sample stock - it still costs a lot of money to send out - paperwork, freight, reps follow up etc

  Imagine the uproar if the question was - should every sign shop make a 5m sample banner to hand out to prospective clients?

  No way - That would cost a lot of money for a small chance of return on the investment!

  It's no different for the distributor. Personally I will always make a sample available as long as I am pretty sure there will be a return on my time and efforts or that customer is a good loyal user of our products.

• Yes and YES. How else are we going to know. Also how can we test what they say. I have had samples fail in the past. Mainly because the rep KNOWS NOTHING !!!!

• no i don't use sample rolls for customer work, the sample rolls are to short to do sufficient testing in the first place 10 meters should be the minimum. and i would consider that using an untried product far to risky, as the performance is unknown, thats why its a test sample..... (all flags signs and banners, peter wagener)

• No. Sample media is offered by suppliers for vendors to try and test a new media with their printer and application systems. These are generally 600x3000 in size which is suitable for testing. I don't feel it is necessary to offer 5m samples. If more sampling is required, that can be negotiated between you and supplier.

• Yes sometimes I use sample for clients jobs but I let them know and charge them a reduced rate and let them know if it doesn't preform I will replace.

• Oh yes. In my 25 years in the sign industry I have seen many operators begging for free samples only to sell them. Not only media but also display frames etc.

• It would have to be a pretty small job to be able to use a sample! Also, why would you use a product that you haven't tested for a paying customer. The idea of a sample is so that you can test it's suitability before you sell products to your customers. 5mtrs is way too much to expect a supplier to give away foc - they'd only pass on more costs to you when you make a purchase.

• No we don't use sample media for paying jobs. most of my suppliers are happy to provide me with samples we i asked for sample. (ET Signs,Masoud)

• No - we test them inhouse - whats the point of selling it to a client who then comes back a week later & advises that its junk - not worth the risk!

• No way, samples are for us to do rigorous testing in-house, not for testing on customers.

However I do agree that suppliers should supply those that would have a genuine need for the product with a sample (1m-2m or what is genuinly required) for testing only to ensure that their product prints correctly on their clients printer/printers - excessive amounts are just taking advantage of your supplier. If suppliers are required to use massive amounts of new product as samples understand that the expense will need to be recouped through possible increasing prices on their most popular sales items.
