• You have to take the time to locate quality suppliers and build relationships with them. If your using installers or sign writers on an ad hoc basis then certainly, yes, they can be hard to find, especially at the last minute. Most printers don't have the time to put internal resources on to manage this part of the supply chain as their business don't have the volume of work to justify the overhead. Typically that type of work is outside of what they normally do and they take it on to retain the print or their customer. We saw this opportunity some time ago and created a company to fill that void. We say, "do what you do best, you print, we install" and we align ourselves with a variety of printers and offer them access to our Australia and NZ network of 120 plus subcontract sign writers and installers. We manage their jobs / campaigns smoothly and competitively because we work on volume. (Signifies, Warwick Green)

• We subcontract all the time for large corporates - and love the work. But we choose what & how it is installed. They send us the artwork they want and we make it happen! After all, we have to live in the locality and quick fading, faulty, poorly measured and collapsing signs are not a good look for our business. What I hate is the "let's-call-ourselves-signwriters" who take the local work away from us with their ill-informed ideas, poor materials and budget prices only to call us to install a miracle at their price. We are the face (& logo) onsite who gets the blame (and sued) for bad work. If they can't install a sign how are they going to know how to quote or make the sign properly! Installers are hard to find for 2 reasons: 1) they don't want the blame for dodgy signs which is not their fault and 2) everyone wants to be lazy - why get up a ladder at 6am when someone else can do it?

• As a Sign Company we are often asked to install, we are often dictated the prices being told that there other installers can do the job in half the time for $$40-50 per hour. I would expect most companies would need to make at least $50 an hour just to meet their running costs. On a normal job we are at $80 per hour plus markup on material and then a profit margin on top of the job. When given a choice to do this or work for $50 per hour what do you think they choose?

• I am new to the industry and i am surprised that the industry collectively does not seek to promote the signage industry as an interesting and enjoyable industry to work in. Kids leave high school and other industries compete for their interest and skill. May be I'm missing something but I don't see the industry making the case for a place to be.

• Sign business is not high profit business specially when you subcontract the job. (ET SIGNS: Masoud) 

• I think traditional sign painters are hard to find as the old school are all retiring and the young guns are either run off their feet or prone not to want to do sub contract work. All the guys that I use are retired and the new ones I've approached want top dollar as it is a case of supply v demand. Installers aren't that hard to find but if they only do a few jobs a year for you they will charge top dollar. My contract fitters I've been using for over 10 years and they are great, but busy. Work WITH them and they will help you out. They are being burdened with huge insurances now, so if they tend to be a bit choosy from experience. Plenty of easy jobs out there, they don't need the hard ones if you are going to quibble about price.

• Because they start as only installers & then while onsite, clients ask questions & they start to look to sell print which start by them brokering print to a mate of theirs. Then, the buy their own printers etc & become a competitor...Instead of sticking to what they do best - that way they would get a lot of business but the allure of an"easy" buck is too much!!!

• I don't think Installers are hard to find. Traditional sign writers are still around too but in high demand. It doesn't seem like anyone is being trained in sign writing brush skills so I imagine as we go forward, it will become harder and harder to find them. (Sign Concepts SA Pty.
