For the long timers... which decade of business life has been the best in our industry and why?:
- Always the decade you are in NOW. Live for the moment, seize the opportunities that are abundant now. That said I love my opposition to live in the past with their memories, staying safe and secure in their memories of past glory.
- I would have to say from 1998 to 2007 were the best years, consumer confidence and business confidence was high and everything was bouncing along. Things were just simpler then as well, no smartphones, the internet was still growing, social media was not really there, China had not bastardised products to the extent we have now so quality in the marketplace was a lot higher and you didnt have the Chinese cowboys as much then. Ahhh! the good times.
- In my opinion leading into my 42nd year in the Signage Business the best time for the sign industry was the late 70's early 80's. That's when there was a lot of very talented 'SIGNWRITERS'were around in the game. When quality tradesmen were aplenty and time was not the essence - customers were prepared to wait to get a quality hand written sign. Patience was a virtue !!! .....I know those days a well behind us with all the technology around now to manufacture signs, the old brush days are definitely not forgotten & on the very odd occasion I get to handwrite a fluoro window !!!. I hope the young tradies coming through in the sign industry don't forget their roots & what it actually means to call yourself a SIGNWRITER !!! it is a different world we live in these days. - year 2000 > to the global down turn...
- After four of them, every decade has been the best ever until the next. The sign industry is the only way left to be a manufacturer and also be creative, or visa versa in a commercial world. Once it's in your blood it won't go away. I still get a buzz when driving down the street and look at signs I made forty years ago still lit up. The web will never supersede visual branding. The transition from brush to computer cut, to roll digital, to flat bed print is exciting. I can't wait for the next forty years. (Barry Scott, Scott Signs)
- 30 years ago, when computers were only just taking off, and they complemented what the signwriter did. It was all creative, there was lots of skilled people in the trade, and clients had respect for the signwriter and their craft,(not signmaker). You charged a fair price and we're not undercut by others desperate for work, or selling themselves too short and ruining the industry. Hate to say it, but they were the good old days!

- I am now 30 years in this industry and for me it has to be the ninety's - we were still very much an artistic based skilled industry. We could put our own artistic flair to a project and you had to have creative artisctic ability. Those who were known as signwriters were real tradesmen, who served their time and were genually skilled at thier trade. If you could only install signs or put down vinyl you were classed as a labourer. - Computer design packages and Vinyl cutters were now very much within our industry but they were used as another tradesmans tool to help the tradesman do a better job. Unlike the industry today which is very much technology based, you are more the graphic designer who requires technical machines to produce the work and installers or even worse you are a brockerage/middle man that only gets the work in and then purchases it from China or other third parties at highly reduced rates and employ contractors to install. You really are No longer required to have served your time as an apprentice to want to be classed as a "signwriter" or should I say you are only a glorified vinyl jockey / labourer.....
- 2000-2010, Sydney was pumping after the Olympics.
- 1990-2000. No GST. Yearly tax returns instead of every 12 weeks. Realistic staff wages. 30% more business. Less Govt fines. From jul 1 2000 instant 30% cut off our business turnover resulting in 2 staff being layed off and positions never refilled nor could be offered. _____________________________________________________________

Attention all signies in South Australia
A couple of weeks ago we had a survey on why the number of apprentices were dropping across the country. One of the comments stated that there was no TAFE in South Australia any more. This is not true!!!!
Julie Rochester from Sign Concepts, an active member of ASGA wrote to correct this statement. She writes.....
South Australia does still have a Signwriting Certificate 3 course available for apprentices. Next year they will move from Gilles Plains Campus to the new Tonsley Park campus. We are pushing for a Certificate 2 course to be added as well as programs aimed at School Students.

44" (1.11m) wide. Running perfectly. Recently had both printheads replaced with new items. Reasonable amount of ink left. All nozzles firing perfectly. Comes with lots of rolls of paper and canvas, worth hundreds. Comes with two roll paper holders, one for 2" core rolls and one for 3" core. Takes cut sheet paper too. Huge colour gamut from the 12 inks. Unbelievable quality and fast, quiet economical printing.
Pickup is in Rosebery, NSW 2018. This unit is large and heavy and requires removalists to move properly. Some ink will be lost during the move, because the print heads have to be drained before it can be moved.

The girl said"I'll go first." She walked past the chair, the whip and the gun and stepped right into the lion's cage.
The lion started to snarl and pant and began to charge her.
About half way there she threw open her coat revealing her beautiful naked body.
The lion stopped dead in his tracks sheepishly crawled up to her and started licking her ankles.
He continued to lick her calves kissed them and then rested his head at her feet.
The circus owner's mouth was on the floor.
He said "I've never seen a display like that in my life."
He then turned to the young man and asked"Can you top that?"
The young man replied "No problem just get that lion out of the way."
