Last Week's Survey
Do you think operators in our industry should have a trade licence like other trades (Electricians, Plumbers, etc)?
- Yes I do, it would give us all an understanding as to what sort of machines and what real skills the operator has.
- Yes no doubt, there are so many out there who make the sign industry looking really bad with no idea how to do it right and stuffing things up badly. For sure a trade diploma like in Europe should be essential to the one who owns and runs the business.
- This could be a tricky question unless the term 'Operator' is defined. Certainly, those operating larger 'offset' style equipment might benefit from qualifying for 'a trade licence' and assist employers in selection of employees working larger and complicated machines. But are owner operators with some of the smaller digital and wide format machines going to need a licence. The latter might be better served and benefit their customers by having to display 'a certificate of competence' which may alleviate 'fly by nighters' and backyard operations.
- Yes, most definitely, well over due for tighter control on our industry!
- About 10 - 12 years ago it was passed in parliament that a BSA license is required for anyone doing sign installation. Probably worth looking into for those who don't have one.
most definatley, get rid of ther back yarders. - No!!!!! It would just end up as another Tax and we would get nothing for it. Once again definitely no.
- Now days all you need is a graphic artist, a large format printer, a TA with a tec screw gun and you are in the sign business. Signs need to be installed so they don't fall down putting the public at risk from amateur operators. But just say the company only does vehicle wraps, should they be licensed? I think not, it then becomes difficult to legislate/license what level of sign maker you are. Not only that the almighty dollar will decide who people deal with and licensing won't stop the shonky operators or people buying from them.
- Definitely! there are a lot of people who don't know what they are doing and call them selves a sign writer/person
- Yes, definitely.
- Absolutely. And the sooner the better.
- A definite resounding Yes.
- I believe sign installation should be a recognised trade to protect both the consumer and the installers & sign companies who are committed to providing acceptable standards of service and installation. This is especially pertinent for complex or highly skilled applications such as vehicle wrapping or where public safety is at risk (way-finding, road signage). Too many new companies and DIY installers wanting to make a fast buck nowadays are unaware of the consequences of their irresponsible actions, which can, amongst other things, lead to permanently damaging the consumers' property. Who can back up the end-client if something goes wrong? If left to the discretion of the original installer and his practices are unethical or he goes bust, the only thing left for the client is a hard lesson to be learnt and paying someone else to fix it. An installer must be evaluated on his knowledge, experience, skill-level and commitment. Licenses may be categorised according to different types of installation as well qualified to set standards of skill-levels. There must be an accepted, unified industry standard. Yes, this requires a huge shift in the industry. Yes, it requires a lot of red tape and will add hurdles to setting up a sign business. Yes, it requires a huge amount of momentum, back up from the industry and the Government. But bad installs happen all the time and they damage the industry reputation as a whole, as well as the brands used for the job. A set standard will filter out the con men, require licensees to act responsibly, re-instill trust from the consumer and avoid unethical operators stealing the business from the ethical ones. Now the question remains of who would have the commitment to engaging themselves on such a steep road? It's a colossal task, the main obstacle being installers themselves with their heads buried in their daily work and trying, understandably, to make ends meet. But it only takes a small group of committed individuals to see the big picture and start the ball rolling and others will follow. If we want to be proud of what we do day-in and day-out, we owe it to our own businesses to support all the means that will help raise our industry standards. Recognition of our trade, as a trade, is a start. We should be proud of it.
- The sooner the better with a system that grades time in the industry...
- Yeah thats all we need, another level of government regulation which really does nothing at all except sucking more cash flow and life out of the proverbial tit that is small business.
- Yes. They should have attended a trade certificate course, which outlines all facets of our industry (TAFE) and only then should they be able to start a business.
- Absolutely, that would be the first step in regulating a trade that has never been regulated like all the other trades, therefore increasing the value of licensed signies hopefully matching what some of the other trades are charging and are worth these days.
- Most certainly this would help regulate our industry and set a standard. It would also help reduce the influx of unqualified companies flooding the market, Trade qualifications don't come easy so why don't we protect our industry and set a standard to help the up and coming apprentices to secure their future.
- No. there are shonkies in any trade. A poor quality sign image wont kill you like a electrical fault or contaminated water will. Being qualified doesnt make you ethical. So in our business your results should be your judge.
- Hell YES, too many backyarders and unqualified people out there with a digital printers cheapening our skills. Although I have never had a customer ask to see my trade certificate, as the quality of our work keeps the customers coming back. This industry needs some sort of policing to keep th Trade alive. All my staff are either tradesman or apprentices. If we don't do it we will see the demise of the humble Signwriter Trade.
- It's too late, the flood gates opened when anyone could buy the computer, software, plotter/printer, that is why there is so few apprenticeships available.
- Yes I do it would hepl the industry a lot.
- Most certainly YES. At present if you can press a few keys on a computer you can set a sign / graphics print business with zero qualifications or zero experience and compete head to head with Qualified and Extremely experienced sign companies that actually know what substrates and materials should be used for the wide variety of applications.
Poorly choice & use of materials and bad installation practices, reflect badly on our industry with pre mature signage failures that are also often vary dangerous. The sign and large format industry is currently being targeted by all & sundry including Photocopy businesses, some franchised Sign business, Graphic Artists and off set printers and a variety of blow ins from anywhere that not only in experienced but are more likely than not going to undercut experienced operators pricing as they have no real experience with quoting and actual costs to produce and install signage. These factors are having a real effect on most legitimate sign and graphic printing businesses through volume of work and erosion of margins. - No I don't. I think there is more than enough rules, regulations, red tape, licenses, etc, etc in our lives already.
- Our industry does have a trade certificate to it already. If you are asking about sign installation then I do believe there should be some sort of competency based assessment or licencing but the down side is that you then add another level of cost to the industry and another level of burecracy to administer it. The sign industry has changed dramatically over the last 30 years and nowadays if you can drive a computer you can be a sign manufacturer. Should we exclude people from the industry that want to do specific work like pull up banners or small sign jobs just because they don't have traditional brush skills?
- No I don't as a general rule, but if a licencing system was brought in, then as a minimum there should be some sort of certification for construction of sign frames & such, because that part of the business is not signwriting, it is construction.
- I kinda of think Yes and No. Yes because there are so many operators that are not qualified at all, we have seen people who are bakers, bouncers starting up sign and graphic business's, with no regard for people that have done a trade or have worked in the industry for a long time and know what they are doing. Also No, as I am sure that we would have to pay out more money for a licence.
- Yes, they should. Hopefully it would lead to more consistency in pricing and quality, even the playing field out a bit? having said that I have no qualifications, just born and bred in the game! If it was required across the board I would get the licence. It's not though so why spend more money - that is hard enough to get any way!
- This is not as simple a question as it seems due to the fact that our indusrty can be broken into 2 main categories. We need to clarify our industry - graphics and digital printing companies (who do not provide manufacturing or installation) and those of us who are "true" signage manufacturing companies who operate with actual tradesman and provide a manufacturing and installation service. If you are just a print and cut - vinyl jockey organisation then it is too difficult to restrict this type of industry to a licence as any Tom Dick and Harry can purchase a printer and plotter and enter the industry. However if you are a manufacturing sign company that builds and installs signage then it MUST become mandatory that you become licenced like any other trade within the building industry. To be able to be classed as a tradesman signwriter and obtain a license you must have either completed a recognosed apprenticeship or had your skills recognised through RPL.
- yes
- Absolutely... There are way too many rouge Sign writers who have NO idea what they are doing. Giving us trade qualified sign writers a bad name. We are always fixing up other peoples mistakes.
- Yes, people in this industry should have licence and basic understanding of business management and accounting before commit to business and make the business hell for the existing one.
- Yes
