Last Week's Survey
What are your feelings on small business employers dealing with the unrealistic wages expectations of their employees compared to their limited actual skill levels and lack of highly skilled employees in this industry today?
- I beleive that my staff are realist in their wage demands I keep them informed about all aspects of the company .Their skilled are excellent. If you treat staff like family in a small business you will get quality work and understanding of what pressures there are to keep the company going.
- So many matters in one question. Firstly, unrealistic wages... many opinions will come of this, but in a nutshell, there is fault on both employer, and employee in this matter. Employer in regard to the idea that employees are to be multi-skilled, not problem with that, but there becomes a problem if one employee is to do the work of 3 employees, on the one wage. Often without overtime being paid. Therein lies the trap, as overtime attracts higher tax bracket payment, so what is the employee meant to do, he/she needs there job, so work harder and say nothing? Then they tell us that stress is the major cause of downtime, illness, and mistakes in industry today - vicious cycle - no answer
Then - the matter of "skilled" levels in this country, is a matter that has no fault with either employee or employer. Take for instance the "graphic designer" in any business. Mostly these people are talented, "self trained" people who don't have any courses available to "train" under. So they are classed as unskilled, even though the nerve centre of most sign/print businesses revolved around this person/s. Fault here lies with ridiculous decisions, to eliminate training courses that deal specifically with CMYK printing, press knowledge, sign knowledge, and not just Multi-media design. High res work is quite different in this example to low res screen work. In summary, the signwriting training is quite good, but there needs to be more localized training available through - probably TAFE or private training institutions to cover the gaps for the "so called unskilled". The wage and work load problem will then level itself out somewhat. It should be noted to that there should be laws put in place that stops people without any knowledge of an industry, buying them, and then putting unreal expectations on their workers to "perform" to their bottom line. - This highlights the lack of training accross all areas (production, management, sales ,marketing etc)in this industry (all sectors)for many years. The intake of trainees & apprentices, upskilling of current employees.
Also the industry has remained in a commodity manufacturing area as opposed to upselling our products as a high end specialty product and still a integral part to any marketing/advertising campaign. - Unions and government are directly to blame for this trend, small businesses can only pay employees what they can afford. Employees, unions and governments need to realise that if busineses don't make money then they can't afford to employ let alone pay higher wages. Without successfull businesses there are no employment opportunities!!!
- These problems are huge and, yet again, this government is largely to blame by creating legislation that makes it VERY unattractive to employ anybody on a full time basis. The government then moans that we are not employing enough people and query why, perhaps the majority of new positions are created on a casual, part time basis where the employee ends up without super and any other benefits. The end result is that the employee has more rights than me in the shop. I for one, will not employ anybody on a full time basis and I am quite happy to stay small as a result.
- Due to the lack of highly / skilled & trained staff, we have to pay ridiculous wages to keep the somewhat trained staff we manage to find.
And these employee's don't always perform to their full potential - but what can you do! It's even more unfair ( as a small business owner,in a rural area) that you as the owner sacrifice your income to pay someone else these wages just to get business growth. And who is the fool that is still here at 7.10pm answering this survey? - Strange survey. I you haven't got good people - train them. If you can't train them get rid of them. After 40 years paying people, the greatest form of charity in this country is payday.
How many owners of sign companies in this country only work a 38 hour week, how many sick days have they taken, do they walk out the door at the end of the day without a worry. I'm tired of bleeding hearts, tribunuals, government agencies, workplace experts, workchoices, consultants, etc, etc. telling me all the laws and conditions about employing people etc. etc, They, who have never written a pay cheque in their life telling me how to run my business. The enterprise, borrowings, risk, investment, hours we put in do not justify the return in monetary value, but love for this crazy business does. I have a firm policy of paying as much as I can afford and over the award for well performing team members. I see now were esteemed leader is suggesting that employees will have the right to demand they work what hours suit them. Don't tell me tha the world is going crazy. - The lack of skill is a reflection of a low wage 'culture', and not just in this industry. While it is difficult to justify higher wages when margins are slim you will not attract highly skilled workers if they can do better elswhere. The essence of the argument is R.O.I (Return On Investment). Many studies have shown that, if you put adequate time and resources into proper training, you will be rewarded with higher productivity, greater efficiency and more loyalty. When technological change is a never-ending story employees often value the opportunity to retrain over many other factors, including wages, as this underwrites their value and longevity in the workplace. It also contributes to the long-term viability of the enterprise.
- It is a problem as there is minimal information for employers available from qualified people whom work in our industry.I never pay the minimum I alwys research out what is the level for all our employees. This varies all over our industry and talking with people we all have different opinions on what is right. It would be massive help to have a scale of wages suitable for this industry as guide.
Remember if you pay peanuts you will get monkeys check out our current politicians and there skills and what they recieve versus productivity and skills in return.I have found out what employment agencies and Tafe tell the future employees is unrealistic and only compounds their expectations.Small and medium buisnesses have budgets and have to work within them or else. Rule No.1 look after good employees and they will reward you. - We need to make engraving a trade skill. We as small business owners need to share our skills and form a standard so a training course could be written covering all forms of engraving and sales.
Wages will always be high if the job is seen as a skill. - Unfortunately this is an issue that is not only happening in our industry but throughout many industries. There are many external factors that are ultimately having an effect on wages throughout the work force and unfortunately if we as small business are to employ more people we are unfortunately having to pay outrageous wages for unskilled or limited skilled workers. It is also an unfortunate fact that many people in this industry have over inflated egos where there egos totally outweigh their abilities. If the unemployment rate were to rise and the circle of influence was to correct itself and the employer was to regain control of the work force this may change.
