COLD-FORMED STEEL (CFS) TOOLS: DOWNLOAD DESIGN GUIDES AND OTHER TECHNICAL DOCUMENTS
Are you interested in finding additional resources for the design of cold-formed steel members? In the September 2016 SE University session, Roger LaBoube, PhD, PE, from Missouri University of Science & Technology, gave a presentation on Design Aids and Design Examples for Cold-Formed Steel. He reviewed the resources available to structural engineers from various organizations and gave references for design examples that are highly sought after by design engineers. Most of these documents are found through the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI), or the Steel Framing Alliance (SFA).

UNDERSTANDING PERSONALITY/BEHAVIOR TRAITS FOR IMPROVED WORKPLACE COMMUNICATION
Effective communication is a skill that is often undervalued in the workplace. We have years of training and multiple degrees to learn our trade, but how much time along the way has been directed at learning to deal effectively with others? Typically, we focus all our energy on learning concrete design techniques (pun intended), but how do we develop our soft skills, in order to promote ourselves and our careers and be productive members of a team? How do we relate to others in an increasingly diverse workplace environment, and learn to thrive with others who may have a different personality type?
In the August 2016 session of SE University, Annie Kao, PE, with Simpson Strong-Tie, gave a presentation on Effective Communication Skills for Workplace Conversations and Meetings. One of the main topics that Annie discussed was the benefit of cultivating a reward-state environment as opposed to a threat-state environment in our workplace.
When employees feel they are in a reward-state, they are able to work more effectively, both independently and as part of a team. Annie provided a useful tool to assess which values create a reward-state, and how we can use this information to be more intentional in the way we relate to our coworkers. The online SCARF Assessment looks at five domains that each of us finds more or less valuable depending on our personality

SEU SPEAKER INSPIRES ORGANIZATIONS:
PURDUE UNIVERSITY LYLES SCHOOL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION OF
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FOUNDATION
|
| | Karyn Beebe, PE APA - The Engineered Wood Association |
SE University began the SEU Speaker Inspires program in 2015 as a way to "pay it forward," enabling our speakers to designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world.
In July 2016, Karyn Beebe, PE, from APA - The Engineered Wood Association, gave a talk on Advancements in Force Transfer Around Openings for Wood Framed Shear Walls. She chose Purdue University Lyles School of Civil Engineering ( www.engineering.purdue.edu/CE) for the SEU Speaker Inspires donation of the month.
Karyn said the following about this charity, "The Civil Engineering Department at Purdue University provided me with an excellent education covering a broad base which prepared me technically for the workforce as well as the PE while offering a supportive community through the guidance of the professors, the Co-operative Education program, and Women in Engineering."

In August 2016, Annie Kao, PE, from Simpson Strong-Tie, gave a talk on Effective Communication Skills for Workplace Conversations and Meetings. She chose the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC) Foundation ( http://seaosc.org/page-18108) for the SEU Speaker Inspires donation of the month.
Annie chose this charity because it "supports structural engineering research and scholarships to students majoring in structural engineering."
Thank you, Karyn and Annie, for helping structural engineers with your SE University sessions, and for your designation of the Purdue University Lyles School of Civil Engineering and the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California Foundation as SEU Speaker Inspires Organizations!

PROVIDE YOUR INPUT AND HELP THE NCSEA BASIC EDUCATION COMMITTEE IDENTIFY KEY ASPECTS OF STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING EDUCATION
The NCSEA Basic Education Committee has its Structural Engineering Curriculum Practitioner Survey online, and is looking for feedback from YOU!
NCSEA currently recommends a Structural Engineering curriculum that includes 12 courses in 9 core topics. The Basic Education Committee wants to hear from practicing engineers, to determine whether the current course recommendations meet the needs of our industry.
This eight-question survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete, and focuses on the importance of specific courses for new graduates to have taken when they start their careers as structural engineers. You can choose to remain anonymous, or elect to share your email address for follow up on the survey.

COMING NEXT TO SE UNIVERSITY - ADVANCED TOPICS IN COMPOSITE STEEL BEAM DESIGN: RETROFIT, SLAB OPENINGS, AND CHANGES TO MINIMUM PERCENT COMPOSITE
On October 12th we will be welcoming Susan Burmeister, PE, from S2B Structural Consultants, to present Advanced Topics in Composite Steel Beam Design: Retrofit, Slab Openings, and Changes to Minimum Percent Composite. This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EDT.
This SE University session will focus on design considerations for composite beam systems when the strength demand on the member is approaching, or possibly exceeding, the member capacity. The discussion will cover special considerations for retrofitting a composite beam while it is under load, a rational approach to evaluating the influence of slab openings on composite beam behavior, and discussion regarding minimum partial composite action including upcoming changes to the 2016 AISC Specification. Design examples will be presented to help illustrate the concepts to be discussed.
Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, October 7th.
