DETERMINING SEISMIC FACTORS FOR COMBINED FRAMING SYSTEMS {VIDEO}
When you are using a combination of different framing systems in one direction of a building, do you struggle with which factors should be used for seismic design? If you have a braced frame with a shear wall below, should the same R, Cd, and Ωo values be used at each floor?

CLARIFICATION OF OHIO CPD ADVISORY
Some questions have arisen from engineers licensed in OH who received a recent mailing with a CPD Advisory regarding Correspondence Courses. Please see the Clarification in RED below which Ohio put on their website recently.
For the upcoming biennial renewal starting in November 2015, the Board would like to remind registrants Board policy allows up to a maximum of three (3) hours continuing professional development per year for the completion of correspondence courses (paper, online, or other formats) provided the course and the course provider meet the requirements of R.C. 4733.151.
Important - Do not confuse correspondence courses and online courses. Correspondence courses are courses that involve reading articles or other text and can be received by mail or online. Correspondence courses are typically self-paced and participation is not monitored by the provider. These types of courses are acceptable up to three hours per year.
SE University courses, which require a login to view, are considered online courses, and are not limited to three hours per year. Please contact us for more information, or with any questions.

SEU SPEAKER INSPIRES - ORGANIZATION OF THE MONTH: NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS
| Betsy Werra E.L.Werra Consulting |
In an effort to "Pay It Forward," SE University is happy to announce our "SEU Speaker Inspires" program in which our speakers can designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world.
Throughout 2015, Betsy Werra from E.L.Werra Consulting presented SEU BIM forum sessions for SE University. She chose the National Alliance on Mental Illness ( http://nami.org) for her SEU Speaker Inspires donation.
Betsy said the following about the National Alliance on Mental Illness, "Many people today have been affected with a mental illness condition but it seems our society does not understand how this affects all involved. My sister was diagnosed with Bi-polar at age 19, and it has been a continuing battle for her to take the right steps in healing her mind with the proper treatments that are available to her. Awareness, love, compassion, support, and willingness to take on the challenges to help a person with a mental illness is also extremely hard on family, friends, and the community. More needs to be done to help not just the individual but also the ones that love them and want to help them, and because of organizations such as NAMI, I know my sister has a chance."
Thank you, Betsy, for helping structural engineers with your SEU BIM Forum sessions, and for your designation of the National Alliance on Mental Illness as our SEU Speaker Inspires Organization of the Month!

COMING NEXT TO SE UNIVERSITY - VIBRATION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE FLOOR SYSTEMS - PART I
On December 9th we will be welcoming Mike Mota, PhD, PE, from CRSI, to present Vibration of Reinforced Concrete Floor Systems - Part I. This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EST.
The objective of this two-part series is to provide a practical design methodology to assist structural engineers so that they can efficiently evaluate the vibrations of different types of reinforced concrete floor systems.
This first session will present concepts related to the vibration evaluation of horizontal framing systems, as well as brief definitions of the most commonly used terminology of structural dynamics as it relates to floor vibrations.
The second session in January will include a presentation on the elementary principles of analyses commonly used for building floors, in line with the overall goal of guiding structural engineers to practical approaches and simple analytical procedures. Acceptance criteria for human comfort and for sensitive equipment as it relates to walking and rhythmic type vibrations will be discussed.
Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, December 4th.
