LEARN, INNOVATE, EXCEL #38

                       October 2015
WELCOME to Learn, Innovate, Excel!  Our goal with this newsletter is to provide useful information and tips that will help you save time, be more productive, and also reduce risk. This information complements our SE University program, by introducing you to tips on a wide variety of topics affecting structural engineers.

If you have any tips you would like to share as part of a future Learn, Innovate, Excel newsletter, please email Lisa Willard or Brian Quinn

LearnDETERMINING TRANSFER FORCES

On projects with steel braced frames, do you typically show transfer forces on your drawings (for delegated connection designs)? Would a refresher on how to calculate these forces be helpful for you or your staff?

During our October 2015 session, Understanding Load Paths, Carol Drucker, SE, PE, P.Eng, from Drucker Zajdel Structural Engineers, described transfer forces as the axial load in the beams on either side of a column that are transferred to the vertical lateral resisting system. Transfer forces can be found, for example, in drag struts leading to a vertical frame.

Carol offered a clear and concise 2-step process to determining transfer forces ... read the full article and view a video clip from the October 2015 session on the SE University Blog

Innovate TIPS ON CONNECTION FORCES/DESIGN FOR HORIZONTAL BRACING

During the October 2015 SE University Session Understanding Load Paths, Carol Drucker discussed load paths for a variety of framing configurations, including vertical and horizontal bracing connections. Carol mentioned that when considering the load path for horizontal bracing connections, she recommends the article "Horizontal Bracing" written by Bo Dowswell, P.E., which appeared in Modern Steel Construction's July 2010 issue.

In this article, Bo Dowswell provides several practical design considerations ... read the full article on the SE University Blog

InspireSEU SPEAKER INSPIRES - ORGANIZATION OF THE MONTH: STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS FOUNDATION

Carol Drucker, SE Drucker Zajdel
Structural Engineers
In an effort to "Pay It Forward," SE University is happy to announce our "SEU Speaker Inspires" program in which our speakers can designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world.

In October 2015, Carol Drucker, SE, PE from Drucker Zajdel Structural Engineers, gave a talk on Understanding Load Paths for SE University. She chose the Structural Engineers Foundation (http://seaoi.org/sef.htm) for the donation of the month.

Carol said the following about the Structural Engineers Foundation, "SEF is dedicated to the advancement of structural engineering through free lectures and the funding of scholarships, research, and publications."

Thank you, Carol, for helping structural engineers with your SE University session, and for your designation of the Structural Engineers Foundation as our SEU Speaker Inspires Organization of the Month!

CongratsSTATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS

In preparation for the end of the year, we'd like to remind you that upcoming SE University sessions can be used to help you meet your continuing education requirements - start earning hours now to avoid the last minute rush (of course, if you find yourself needing last minute hours, we can help with recorded sessions from our SE University Session Archives).

If additional hours are needed, please contact Lisa Willard to discuss how we can help you.

NextSessCOMING NEXT TO SE UNIVERSITY - CLARIFYING FREQUENTLY MISUNDERSTOOD SEISMIC PROVISIONS

On November 18th we will be welcoming back Emily Guglielmo, SE, from Martin/Martin, Inc., to present Clarifying Frequently Misunderstood Seismic Provisions. This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EST.

This session will focus on ASCE 7/IBC seismic provisions that are often misunderstood or incorrectly applied by the practicing structural engineer. Key topics will include: redundancy (ρ), R, Cd and Ωo, and horizontal and vertical lateral force resisting system combinations. Each topic will include references to code provisions, suggestions to simplify, and sample problems.

This session is being held one week later than the normal SE University Core sessions due to speaker changes. Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, November 13th.

To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 ([email protected]) or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 ([email protected]).

Thank you for reading our Learn, Innovate, Excel Newsletter - we hope you found this information useful. If there are any questions we can answer, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or email.

Additionally, if you would be willing to help other structural engineers by sharing tips that you have, please email your tip to [email protected]. If we choose your tip to publish, you will have your choice of a $50 Amazon gift card or a $50 donation sent to the Structural Engineering Association of your choice.
