LearnSOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION - SAMPLE CHECKLISTS
AVAILABLE FROM NIST {VIDEO}

In the May 2015 SE University session, Mat Foundations and Soil Structure Interaction, Ian McFarlane, PE, SE from Magnusson Klemencic Associates discussed sample checklists that are available to help facilitate the implementation of soil-structure interaction on a project. These checklists outline information needed by both the structural and geotechnical engineers, and are included in Chapter 6 of the NIST Document Soil-Structure Interaction for Building Structures (NIST GCR 12-917-21).

In the 2:30 video clip (included on our blog), Ian discusses how the checklists can be used to make sure both the geotechnical and structural engineer receive the information they need ... read the full article on the SE University Blog

STEEL DETAIL SHOP DRAWING REVIEW -
COMPLIMENTARY COPY TO THE FIRST 25 PEOPLE TO EMAIL US!

Steel beam and column shop drawing sheets can be time-intensive to review. Would a checklist be helpful to streamline your structural review process?

SE University is pleased to announce that we have compiled a Steel Shop Drawing Review Checklist to assist structural engineers in reviewing shop drawings. This checklist was the basis of the April 2015 SE University session presented by Cathleen Jacinto, PE, SE.

The second section of the checklist is the Steel Detail Shop Drawing Review Checklist. The full checklist consists of the following 3 sections:

A. Steel Erection Shop Drawing Review

B. Steel Detail Shop Drawing Review

C. Coordination with Other Submittals

The Steel Detail Shop Drawing Review section of the checklist includes multiple items for review on steel detail shop drawings, including guidance on reviewing steel beams ... read the full article on the SE University Blog

The first 25 people to email Brian.Quinn@LearnWithSEU.com will receive a copy of the

InspireSEU SPEAKER INSPIRES - ORGANIZATION OF THE MONTH: UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Ian McFarlane, PE, SE
Magnusson Klemencic Associates
In an effort to "Pay It Forward," SE University is happy to announce our "SEU Speaker Inspires" program in which our speakers can designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world.

In May 2015, Ian McFarlane, PE, SE gave a talk on Mat Foundations and Soil Structure Interaction for SE University. He chose University of Washington Department of Civil Engineering (http://www.ce.washington.edu/) , for the donation of the month.

Ian said this about his choice, "UW CEE not only gave me a fantastic technical background and got me involved in exciting research topics, but they also provided an excellent balance by frequently involving practicing engineers in the curriculum. This frequent exposure to practicing engineers was very beneficial to me and ultimately led to my position at MKA which makes me extremely grateful!"

Thank you, Ian, for helping structural engineers with your SE University session, and for your designation of University of Washington Department of Civil Engineering as our SEU Speaker Inspires Organization of the Month!

CongratsSTATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS

As we prepare to enter the second half of the year, we'd like to remind you that upcoming SE University sessions can be used to help you meet your continuing education requirements.

If additional hours are needed, please contact Lisa Willard to discuss how we can help you.

Engineers in the following states have license renewals due on June 30th:

Kentucky - Last Names A-K

West Virginia

Oregon - Last Names G-K

Engineers in the following states have license renewals due on September 30th:

Louisiana - Some Engineers

Pennsylvania

In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.

For more information about license renewal, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.

We hope that you find this information beneficial. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Willard.

NextSessCOMING NEXT TO SE UNIVERSITY -
FLEXURAL DESIGN OF SINGLE ANGLE MEMBERS

Please note that this session is scheduled one week later than normal because of the July 4th Holiday

On July 15th we will be welcoming Whitney McNulty, PE, SECB, from BL Companies, to present
Flexural Design of Single Angle Members. This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EDT.

Once relegated to a stand-alone specification, the design of single angles was brought into the mainstream with the 13th edition of the AISC Steel Manual Specification. While there is an expectation that engineers will design single angles properly, a quick look through the AISC Specification shows that most of what engineers know about flexure in symmetrical shapes doesn't help when it comes to single angles.

During this session, Whitney will discuss flexural design of single angles using the provisions in Chapter F of the AISC Steel Design Specification, as well as his book, Single Angle Design Manual. Geometric axis and principal axis bending of equal and unequal leg angles will be presented, and flexural deflection of single angle members will also be covered.

Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, July 10th.

To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 (Lisa.Willard@LearnWithSEU.com) or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 (Brian.Quinn@LearnWithSEU.com).
