LearnSTEEL SHOP DRAWING REVIEW CHECKLIST (PART I) -
STEEL ERECTION SHOP DRAWING REVIEW -
COMPLIMENTARY COPY TO THE FIRST 25 PEOPLE TO EMAIL US!

Are you anticipating that steel shop drawings will arrive soon for one of your projects? Would a checklist be helpful for you in your structural review?

SE University is pleased to announce that we have compiled a Steel Shop Drawing Review Checklist to assist structural engineers in reviewing shop drawings during the construction phase. This checklist was the basis of the April 2015 SE University session presented by Cathleen Jacinto, PE, SE.

The first section of the checklist is the Steel Erection Shop Drawing Review Checklist. The full checklist consists of the following 3 sections:

A. Steel Erection Shop Drawing Review

B. Steel Detail Shop Drawing Review

C. Coordination with Other Submittals

The Steel Erection Shop Drawing Review section of the checklist includes multiple items for review on steel erection drawings, including guidance on reviewing partial steel submittals, and ...

InnovateCOMMON RFI #4: PROVIDE WASHER PLATE SIZES REQUIRED AT ANCHOR RODS AND HIGH-STRENGTH FASTENERS

Do you need a quick reference for plate washer sizes? Has a Contractor recently requested this information from you?

SE University is compiling examples of Common Requests for Information (RFIs) sent to the Structural Engineer of Record. Following each RFI, we provide some resource information based on experience from contributing structural engineers. We hope you will find this resource information useful as you customize it to meet your specific project needs. Tips to avoid the RFI during the design phase may also be offered.

The RFI presented in this post is for Steel Projects

RFI #4: Provide washer plate sizes required at anchor rods and high-strength fasteners

Example: Plate washer sizes may not have been specified for varying anchor rod diameters, and the Contractor requests clarification ...read the full article on the SE University Blog

InspireSEU SPEAKER INSPIRES - ORGANIZATION OF THE MONTH: CANCER RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Cathleen Jacinto,
PE, SE
In an effort to "Pay It Forward," SE University is happy to announce our "SEU Speaker Inspires" program in which our speakers can designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world.

In April 2015, Cathleen Jacinto, PE, SE, gave a talk on Checklists to Assist the Structural Engineer During Construction Administration for SE University. She chose Cancer Research Institute (http://cancerresearch.org
) for the donation of the month.

Cathleen said this about her choice, "Cancer Research Institute is a great organization advancing research in several types of cancer immunology, a disease affecting millions of people."

Thank you, Cathleen, for helping structural engineers with your SE University session, and for your designation of Cancer Research Institute as our SEU Speaker Inspires Organization of the Month!

CongratsSTATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS

As we prepare to enter the summer months, we'd like to remind you that upcoming SE University sessions can be used to help you meet your continuing education requirements.

If additional hours are needed, please contact Lisa Willard to discuss how we can help you.

Engineers in the following states have license renewals due on June 30th:

Kentucky - Last Names A-K

West Virginia

Oregon - Last Names G-K

In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.

For more information about license renewal, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.

We hope that you find this information beneficial. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Willard.

NextSessCOMING NEXT TO SE UNIVERSITY -
SOFTWARE DEFAULT SETTINGS AND EFFECTS ON STRUCTURAL MODELS (RAM STRUCTURAL SYSTEM)

On June 10th we will be welcoming Seth Guthrie, PE, SE, from Bentley Systems, to present
Software Default Settings and Effects of Structural Models (RAM Structural System). This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EDT.

When using structural engineering software, there are many default settings, including material properties and unbraced length factors, that can have an impact on analysis and design. If engineers do not understand how the defaults are used for the models they create, generated results may not reflect the actual behavior of the building.

In this SE University session, Seth Guthrie will review common software defaults and discuss how these values can impact the analysis results and design values. He will identify which reports can be generated to allow engineers to review the material properties and analysis/design settings to ensure that the expected values are being used. Attendees will also learn about creating models to be used as template files, so that different sets of default values can be used as the basis for starting new models.

While many structural software programs have default settings that can be modified by the engineer, this session will use Bentley Systems programs (RAM Structural System, RAM Elements) to show the impact of default settings on analysis and design results.

Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, June 5th.

To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 ([email protected]) or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 ([email protected]).

Thank you for reading our Learn, Innovate, Excel Newsletter - we hope you found this information useful. If there are any questions we can answer, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or email.

Additionally, if you would be willing to help other structural engineers by sharing tips that you have, please email your tip to [email protected]. If we choose your tip to publish, you will have your choice of a $50 Amazon gift card or a $50 donation sent to the Structural Engineering Association of your choice.
