Initial Review Checklist - Available to SE University Clients through the SEU Resource Center

What are the initial action steps you take when you first receive a shop drawing? Have you ever put aside a construction submittal for a few days only to discover later that it was sent in error, and could have been returned to the GC sooner?

SE University has compiled an Initial Submittal Review Checklist to highlight 6 key items for structural engineers to review when first receiving any construction submittal. The Checklist is ...

InnovateCOMMON RFI #3: ALTERNATE METHOD FOR LEVELING
STEEL COLUMNS REQUESTED

Has a Contractor requested an alternate method for leveling steel columns from what is indicated on your column design details?

SE University is compiling examples of Common Requests for Information (RFIs) sent to the Structural Engineer of Record during construction. Following each RFI, we provide some resource information based on experience from contributing structural engineers. We hope you will find this resource information useful as you customize it to meet your specific project needs. Tips to avoid the RFI during the design phase may also be offered.

The RFI presented in this post is for Steel Projects

InspireSEU SPEAKER INSPIRES - ORGANIZATION OF THE MONTH: TENNESSEE TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

Otto Schwarz, PE, SE
In an effort to "Pay It Forward," SE University is happy to announce our "SEU Speaker Inspires" program in which our speakers can designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world.

In March 2015, Otto Schwarz, PE, SE, from Ryan Biggs Clark Davis, gave a talk on Concrete Slabs on Grade for SE University. He chose his alma mater, Tennessee Technological University, for the donation of the month.

Otto said this about his choice, "Tennessee Tech gave me a firm base of knowledge for all I have done since and I am very grateful for the professors who dedicated their efforts toward the engineering student body."

Thank you, Otto, for helping structural engineers with your SE University session, and for your designation of Tennessee Technological University as our SEU Speaker Inspires Organization of the Month!

CongratsSTATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS

As we enter the 2nd quarter of 2015, we'd like to remind you that upcoming SE University sessions can be used to help you meet your continuing education requirements.

We hope that you find this information beneficial. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Willard.

NextSessCOMING NEXT TO SE UNIVERSITY -
MAT FOUNDATIONS AND SOIL STRUCTURE INTERACTION

On May 13th we will be welcoming Ian McFarlane, PE, from Magnusson Klemencic Associates, to present Mat Foundations and Soil Structure Interaction. This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EDT.

During this SE University session, Ian McFarlane, PE, will discuss design of mat foundations for both non-seismic and high-seismic conditions. The session will describe the uses of mat foundations, cover historical perspectives that have led to the current procedures, and discuss soil properties and soil-structure interaction.

Guidance will be provided for proportioning, analysis, and design for mat foundations. Code requirements and accepted approaches to their implementation will be addressed, with additional discussion on best practices that go beyond code minimum requirements. Detailing and constructability tips will also be presented.

Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, May 8th.

To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 ([email protected]) or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 ([email protected]).
