SE University is pleased to announce a new Digital Library as an addition to our growing online SEU Resource Center. This Library contains links to published technical documents including Codes, Manuals, Articles, and Design Aids to serve as a resource for structural engineers. Our goal is to provide rapid access to commonly used technical documents.

The first part of the Digital Library document is now available. The topics in this first section include:

BIM/Structural Software

Checklists

Codes

Cold-Formed Steel

InnovatePRESCRIPTION TO PERFORMANCE (P2P) INITIATIVE
FOR CONCRETE SPECIFICATIONS

Have you experienced negative concrete pour results in which the concrete mix was potentially the source of the issue? Traditional concrete specifications have been found to be prescriptive in nature and sometimes limit the types and quantities of ingredients and material proportions, yielding unexpected results.

There has been a shift in the concrete industry towards performance-based, rather than prescriptive, project specifications for concrete. Performance-based specifications provide details for required results such as strength, durability, and serviceability, and are free of process limitations such as mixture proportions and construction methods. Performance-based specifications encourage innovative products and construction methods along with testing and quality management systems.

CongratsCOORDINATION CHECKLISTS FOR STAIR AND ELEVATOR DESIGN

Over the last month, SE University has been working with Cathleen Jacinto, SE, PE, (pictured at right) to expand the technical content available to SE University subscribers. Cathleen is the author of the "Digital Library (Part I)," the first article in today's newsletter.

In addition to the Digital Library (Part I), Cathleen has compiled the following checklists:

Coordination Checklist for Stair Design

Do you have a multistory project where you'll be involved in the design of the stairs? Would it be helpful to have a document that could help you define the scope of your design with the architect and owner, and identify key items in the design process? With input from practicing structural engineers, SE University has compiled a Coordination Checklist for Stair Design to assist structural engineers in their coordination with architects and owners during the design phase.

This checklist serves as a starting point for your design coordination efforts related to stair design. Included are items related to ... read the full article on the SE University Blog

Coordination Checklist for Elevator Design

Do you have a project with an elevator? Would you like a checklist to help you in considering the several coordination aspects that contribute to elevator design? With the help of an elevator consultant, SE University has compiled a Coordination Checklist to assist structural engineers in their coordination with architects and elevator consultants during the design phase.

From elevator clearances and loading to structural detailing, this Elevator Checklist serves as an overall starting point for your design coordination efforts.

The Checklist is divided into 4 Sections:

                                   A.  Elevator Geometry and Clearances
                                   B.  Elevator Design Loads
                                   C.  Elevator Structural Analysis
                                   D.  Elevator Structural Drawings and Detailing

NextSessCOMING NEXT MONTH TO SE UNIVERSITY -
LOAD TRANSFER THROUGH DIAPHRAGMS

On January 14th, we will be welcoming Terry Malone, PE, from Woodworks, for an SE University session on Load Transfer Through Diaphragms. This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EST.

This presentation will provide a review of a method of analysis that can be used to address diaphragm irregularities that commonly occur in today's structures, and present examples using wood and steel deck systems. Topics will include code requirements, how to recognize diaphragm irregularities and discontinuities, how shears are distributed through complex diaphragms, how to solve the transfer of discontinuous forces across areas of discontinuity, and the analysis of flexible wood sheathed or untopped steel decking diaphragms with horizontal offsets.

Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, January 9th.

To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 ([email protected]) or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 ([email protected]).

ExcelSTATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS

It's the end of the year, and we'd like to remind you that upcoming SE University sessions can be used to help you meet your continuing education requirements. If additional hours are needed, please contact Lisa Willard to discuss how we can help you.

ALL engineers in the following states have license renewals on December 31st:

Alabama

North Carolina

Georgia

Washington*

Mississippi

SOME engineers in the following states have license renewals on December 31st:

Arkansas

New Mexico

Iowa

North Dakota

Missouri

Oregon

Nebraska

*These states do not have continuing education requirements.

In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.

For more information about license renewal, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.
