ASCE 7-10 WIND LOAD (COMPONENTS & CLADDING) - DOES A CURVED SURFACE CREATE A DISCONTINUITY? {VIDEO}
When determining wind load pressures for components and cladding loads, areas of discontinuity in a building (i.e. building corners) have a zone where the Gcp value is increased. This results in wind pressures that have higher values within the width of the discontinuity.
In the October 2014 SE University session, Designing for ASCE 7-10 Wind Loads - Components & Cladding, Don Scott, SE, from PCS Structural Solutions, was asked about curved structures in plan, and whether a curve would be considered a discontinuity.
Don indicated that while the ASCE 7 code does not specifically ...read more

DO MINIMUM DESIGN WIND PRESSURES NEED TO BE APPLIED TO INTERIOR WALLS? {VIDEO - SEU RESOURCE CENTER}
During the October 2014 SE University session, Designing for ASCE 7-10 Wind Loads - Components & Cladding, Don Scott, SE, from PCS Structural Solutions, was asked the question, "Does the minimum design wind pressure of ASCE Section 30.2.2 (16 psf) apply to walls in the interior of an enclosed building?"
In response, Don said that it is up to engineering judgment, but many engineers would not design the interior walls for the 16 PSF. However, if a loading dock is present ...read more |
COMING NEXT MONTH TO SE UNIVERSITY - ETHICS IN THE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE OF ENGINEERING
On November 12th, we will be welcoming Vincent Drnevich, PhD, PE, from Purdue University, for an SE University session on Ethics in the Practice of Professional Engineering.
Ethics in the practice of professional engineering is important for engineers of all experience levels. This course explains why ethics is important, gives an overview of professional codes of ethics, and describes the rules of professional conduct in the NCEES Model Law and Rules. Guidelines for making value-laden decisions will be provided, and the value of professional and technical societies in maintaining ethical health fitness will be discussed. Several case studies will be used to illustrate the process, and sources for additional case studies will be provided.
This course fulfills one hour on ethics applicable to the practice of engineering that may be needed for engineering license renewal.
Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, November 7th.
To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 (Lisa.Willard@LearnWithSEU.com) or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 (Brian.Quinn@LearnWithSEU.com).

*These states do not have continuing education requirements.
In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.
For more information about license renewal, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.
