LearnBUILDING PERIODS FOR WIND LOADS VS. SEISMIC LOADS

During the September 2014 SE University session, Designing for ASCE 7-10 Wind Loads - Main Wind Force Resisting System, Don Scott, SE, from PCS Structural Solutions, asked and answered the question, "Why is Building Period Important?" Don talked about how the period affects the Gust Effect Factor, which in turn affects the building pressure.

As part of this discussion, Don also discussed the idea that a higher period is conservative for wind design, while for seismic design, a lower period is conservative. In the article...read more

InnovateWHEN ARE BUILDINGS EXEMPT FROM TORSIONAL LOAD CASES? {VIDEO - SEU RESOURCE CENTER}

As part of Chapter 27 in ASCE 7-10, Figure 27.4-8 shows the 4 different load cases that should be considered related to the wind loads. Cases 2 and 4 are the two cases that include torsional moment. Many engineers find that when they start considering all of these load cases, with wind blowing in each direction, they end up with a large number of load cases to consider. Moving next to load combinations, and the various iterations, so many combinations are created that it can be difficult and time consuming to solve the problem without using software.

The question arises, however; are there situations where torsional load cases do not need to be considered...read more

NextSessCOMING NEXT WEEK TO SE UNIVERSITY - DESIGNING FOR
ASCE 7 WIND LOADS - COMPONENTS & CLADDING

On October 8th, we will be welcoming back Don Scott, SE, from PCS Structural Solutions, for an SE University session on Designing for ASCE 7 Wind Loads - Components & Cladding.

This SE University session will include a review of the various methods allowed in the ASCE 7-10 standard for the determination of the Components & Cladding design wind pressures. The presentation will discuss the change of the wind provisions to "ultimate" loads, and the advantages and disadvantages associated with each of the various methods for determining the design wind pressures allowed in the standard.

Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, October 3rd.

To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 ([email protected]) or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 ([email protected]).

ExcelSTATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS

In preparation for the end of the year, we'd like to remind you that upcoming SE University sessions can be used to help you meet your continuing education requirements. If additional hours are needed, please contact Lisa Willard to discuss how we can help you.

The following states have license renewals by November 30th:

Michigan (October 31st)

Engineers renewing in 2014 will not require PDHs for this renewal, but will need to start earning hours as of November 1st

Illinois SE (November 30th)

ALL engineers in the following states have license renewals on December 31st:

Alabama

North Carolina

Georgia

Washington*

Mississippi

SOME engineers in the following states have license renewals on December 31st:

Arkansas

New Mexico

Iowa

North Dakota

Missouri

Oregon

Nebraska

*These states do not have continuing education requirements.

In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.

For more information about license renewal, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.

We hope that you find this information beneficial. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Willard.
