LearnSPREADSHEET DESIGN TOOLS FOR HSS CONNECTIONS

During the January and February 2014 SE University sessions, Kim Olson from FORSE Consulting discussed spreadsheet design tools that were being developed in conjunction with the Steel Tube Institute (STI) for different types of HSS Connections. These design tools are now available through the Steel Tube Institute under Products - Resources - Design Aids.

Spreadsheet tools that are available include ...read more

InnovateHSS TRUSS CONNECTIONS: Q&A ON WELDING FOR THE HIDDEN TOE PARTIAL OVERLAP CONDITION

During the February 2014 SE University Session, Kim Olson discussed gapped and overlapped truss connections. She talked about the "Hidden Toe" partial overlap condition, and welding requirements for the hidden toe. Kim noted that welding of the hidden toe is not required if the components normal to the chord differ by 20% or less, and a question was posed by an attendee wanting to know what comparison should be made to evaluate the 20% difference.

Kim explained that the comparison is between the components of the branch forces normal to the chord member. This is also explained ...read more

CongratsSE SOLUTIONS ASSISTING AISC WITH STUDENTS CONNECTING WITH INDUSTRY SESSIONS AT NASCC

Students networking with engineers at the 2013 Students Connecting with Industry Sessions

SE Solutions is excited to be assisting AISC with its event for structural engineering students at the North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC) for the 4th year in a row. The Students Connecting with Industry Sessions (SCIS) begins with several speakers in the morning talking about student specific issues, followed by lunch and an exhibit hall tour. The afternoon features an opportunity for students to meet one-on-one with 40 great companies involved in all different aspects of structural engineering as part of the Direct Connect networking session.

With this year's event being in Toronto, students from both the US and Canada will be attending. Student members of AISC and CISC can attend NASCC and SCIS for no charge, and in addition, the education foundations of both AISC and CISC are offering travel reimbursements up to $175 per student. For more information on the event, please see www.aisc.org/scis

Brian Quinn and Lisa Willard from SE Solutions will be attending NASCC April 26 - 28. If you will be attending, we hope to see you there.

NextSessCOMING NEXT MONTH TO SE UNIVERSITY - CHECKLISTS FOR THE QUALITY ASSURANCE OF CALCULATIONS, DESIGN,
AND DRAWING PRODUCTION

On April 9th, we will be welcoming back Tom Heausler, PE, SE, from Heausler Structural Engineers, for an SE University session on Checklists for the Quality Assurance of Calculations, Design, and Drawing Production

During this SE University session, Tom will demonstrate how to use a collection of checklists developed for quality assurance of a structural building design. A listing of keywords and phrases will be presented. The keywords can be reviewed at appropriate stages of a project, most notably near the end, in order to ensure that errors and omissions have been minimized. The presentation will elaborate on the most effective use of the list, and discuss the optimum and appropriate stages and staff for its execution.

The checklist is not intended to be a "how-to" design manual or even a procedural manual, but rather a list of reminders to help verify that all critical calculations and design considerations have been made, and that adequate and essential detail information has been provided.

This collection of checklists has been compiled over the last 30 years from experience gained with small, medium, and very large size firms and staffs, and is applicable to structural projects of all sizes and types.

Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, April 4th.

To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 ([email protected]), or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 ([email protected]).
