LearnNEW AISC DESIGN GUIDE AVAILABLE - DESIGN OF
BLAST RESISTANT STRUCTURES

In July 2013, AISC released a new Design Guide for the Design of Blast Resistant Structures. Design Guide 26 is available as a PDF Download for free to AISC Members, or can be purchased as a PDF or hard copy.

In the November 2013 Modern Steel Construction article Bracing for Blast, Patrick Newman, a senior engineer at AISC, discusses some of the design guide's key aspects, including Blast Loads, Blast Design, and Progressive Collapse ...read more

InnovateEXCEL TIPS - USING THE TREND FUNCTION TO INTERPOLATE BETWEEN VALUES

Add a description
In performing engineering calculations, there are often times when you have to interpolate between values to get an answer to use in an equation. We know that similar triangles can be used to find that intermediate value, but how can we automate the process?

In Excel, the Trend function works well when you are trying to identify a number along a straight line. As long as you have your known X and Y values, and the new X value, you can easily determine the new Y value ...read more

ExcelTWO MORE STATES REQUIRING CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR LICENSE RENEWAL (DE AND MI)

Delaware and Michigan are the two newest states to require Continuing Education as a condition for license renewal.

Delaware

For engineers licensed in Delaware, 24 PDHs will be required during each renewal period. The 2014 to 2016 renewal period is the first that requires PDHs to be earned.

Starting June 30, 2013, credits earned can be applied to the 2014-2016 renewal period through the carry forward provision. A maximum of 15 hours earned between June 30, 2013 and June 30, 2014 can be carried into the 2014-2016 renewal period.

At least 3 PDHs must be earned in Professional Ethics, and no more than 9 PDHs may be earned in topics related to business or project management.

Michigan

For engineers licensed in Michigan, the 2013-2015 and 2014-2016 renewal periods are the first that require PDHs to be earned. More information is available through our LearnWithSEU Blog Post on MI Continuing Education

For more information about continuing education and license renewal in all states, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.

NextSessCOMING NEXT MONTH TO SE UNIVERSITY - DESIGN OF MAINTENANCE ACCESS & FALL PROTECTION SYSTEMS

On December 11th, we will be welcoming Kelly Streeter, PE, from Vertical Access for an SE University session on the Design of Maintenance Access & Fall Protection Systems for New and Existing Buildings.

Ideally planned for and designed into a building, access systems for ease of continued maintenance are often value-engineered out of important projects, leading to interesting access challenges. Engineers must work with clients to engineer a range of potential solutions that are then evaluated for cost, ease of use, and other parameters so that in-house and contracted maintenance can be completed safely and efficiently.

Applicable state and federal standards will be reviewed and case studies, including Islip Courthouse and the New York Public Library, will be discussed. Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, December 6th.

To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 ([email protected]), or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 ([email protected]).

Thank you for reading our Learn, Innovate, Excel Newsletter - we hope you found this information useful. If there are any questions we can answer, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or email.

Additionally, if you would be willing to help other structural engineers by sharing tips that you have, please email your tip to [email protected]. If we choose your tip to publish, you will have your choice of a $50 Amazon gift card or a $50 donation sent to the Structural Engineering Association of your choice.
