LearnSEISMIC LOADING AND PROVISIONS FOR INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS - SHOULD YOU USE ASCE 7 CHAPTER 13 OR CHAPTER 15?

In the design of industrial structures, engineers need to know whether the structure and other elements they are designing are considered structures or components under ASCE 7. Because there are different loads and design procedures for Nonbuilding Components (Chapter 13) and Nonbuilding Structures (Chapter 15), the engineer should make the determination before the loads are calculated.

In an August 2012 Structure Magazine article Chapter 13 or Chapter 15? Are You Using the Wrong Loads?, Dain Hammerschmidt, PE and Nicholas Robinson, PE, both from Kiewit Power Engineers Co., present information ...read more

Purdue MSCE Students and Scholarship Award Winners Joey Jones (Left) and Ray Chou (Middle), with SE Solutions, LLC President Brian Quinn

SE Solutions was pleased to recently present scholarships to two Purdue MSCE-Structures students to help defray the cost of their education. Joseph (Joey) Jones, EIT and Raymond (Ray) Chou, EIT were the recipients of the awards. This is the second year that SE Solutions has offered the scholarships.

Joey and Ray will both be graduating this December and are excited to start their careers in structural engineering. ...read more

InnovatePROOFREADING - MORE THAN JUST CHECKING FOR TYPOS {VIDEO}

Have you ever sent out an email, then realized a word is missing in the subject line? Have you written a report, and realized after the report was sent that words were misplaced or used incorrectly? Could these errors have been caught with better proofreading procedures?

During the October 2013 SE University continuing education session Improving Your Writing as a Structural Engineer, Janel Miller presented information on the process of proofreading ...read more, and view a video clip from the SE University session

NextSessCOMING NEXT MONTH TO SE UNIVERSITY - SEISMIC DESIGN OF BUILDINGS, INCLUDING INDUSTRIAL STRUCTURES

On November 13th, we will be welcoming Tom Heausler, PE, SE, from Heausler Structural Engineers, for an SE University session on "Seismic Design of Buildings, Including Industrial Structures."

This presentation will focus on the seismic design provisions for buildings, and then highlight the unique nature of applying seismic design principles to industrial structures. During the session, ASCE 7 Chapters 12 (Buildings) and 15 (Nonbuildings) will be explored, and information will be presented on how to determine which chapter should be used when designing the elements in a building.

High and low seismic risk categories will both be covered, as will the proper selection of R factors, appropriate equations for design, and required detailing provisions. Example approaches and photos will be displayed and explained.

Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, November 8th.

To learn more about subscribing to SE University, please contact either Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436 ([email protected]), or Brian Quinn at (616) 546-9420 ([email protected]).

ExcelSTATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS

It's not too early to start thinking about license renewals through December 2013 - start earning hours now to avoid the last minute rush (of course, if you find yourself needing last minute hours, we can help with recorded sessions from our SE University Session Archives).

States with license renewals before December 1st:

Colorado (October 31st, All Engineers)

Michigan (October 31st, Some Engineers)

Illinois PE (November 30th, All Engineers)

States with license renewals for all engineers on December 31st:

AlabamaNorth Carolina
AlaskaOhio
MaineWashington
MississippiWyoming

States with license renewals for some engineers on December 31st:

ArkansasNew Mexico
IowaNorth Dakota
MissouriOregon
Nebraska

In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.

For more information about license renewal, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.

We hope that you find this information beneficial. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Willard.
