WELCOME to Learn, Innovate, Excel!  Our goal with this newsletter is to provide useful information and tips that will help you save time, be more productive, and also reduce risk. This information complements our SE University program, by introducing you to tips on a wide variety of topics affecting structural engineers.

In addition to our newsletter, we are happy to announce the launching of our new website, www.LearnWithSEU.com, where we will be providing additional valuable information.

If you have any tips you would like to share as part of a future Learn, Innovate, Excel newsletter, please email Lisa Willard or Brian Quinn

LearnHELPFUL TOOLS/SPREADSHEETS AVAILABLE TO STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS AT NO COST

Most engineers utilize spreadsheets or MathCAD tools to a variable extent to save time with structural engineering calculations. Frequently these tools are "self-written" or written by someone at their company. However, many tools have been created by others and we wanted to point out 2 sources for some free tools to help you save time in your various calculations.

The first is www.steeltools.org. This site, supported by AISC, includes files created by AISC, but also allows engineers to upload files that they have created, so that others can use those files and benefit from their knowledge. Some examples of the tools available in the SteelTOOLS Library include...read more.

InnovateSE UNIVERSITY SESSION ARCHIVES - REVIEW PREVIOUS TOPICS

If you have been curious about previous sessions offered by SE University, we would like to direct you to the Session Archives page of the LearnWithSEU website.

The archives were added to allow people access to information about previously offered sessions, and also to make it easier to search for sessions based on topic. If you select the category for a particular session, you will be directed to a page that includes all of the sessions offered that have the same category designation.

We hope that you find the session archives page and the ability to view the list by date or by session category helpful. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Willard at (805) 482-8436, or by email.

ExcelSTATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS

As we begin the new year, there are a number of states with license renewals due by April 30th.

In the following states, ALL engineers must renew their licenses this year, by the specified date:

Connecticut (January 31st)                          Florida (February 28th)*
Utah (March 31st)

In the states below, their renewal dates are as specified, but some engineers' licenses expire in even years, and so will not renew until 2014:

Louisiana (March 31st)                                Kansas (April 30th)

To determine if your license is expiring this year, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.

We hope that you find this information beneficial. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Willard.

* Florida requires that engineers use approved providers for continuing education. SE University is an approved provider to help meet the Area of Practice requirements.

On February 13, 2013, we welcome Perry Green, PhD, PE from Bechtel Power Corporation to present a session focused on Using Open Web Steel Joists and Joist Girders in the Design of Lateral Load Resisting Frames. This session will be part one of a two part series on steel joists.

Perry Green was formerly the Technical Director of the Steel Joist Institute.

Handout and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, February 8, 2013.
