New Product: Cold Water Fisheries Steelhead Trout

This month, we are proud to announce our new partnership with Cold Water Fisheries to bring you a fresh supply of Canadian Steelhead Trout. Cold Water Steelhead Trout is farmed in the pristine waters off Manitoulin Island, Cape Breton - Nova Scotia's South West shore and Newfoundland, Canada.

Cold Water Steelhead Trout is farmed in an environment free of chemicals, antibiotics or GMOs. The growing-cycle is a two-year process, which begins with the selection of certified eggs from strong, fast-growing broodstock.

Cold Water Fisheries has more than one million eggs delivered to their hatcheries each year from Washington State. Eggs arrive to the hatchery at 4°C, then they're warmed up gradually in freshwater to 10°C  to begin their life cycle. 
 
The farm setup is open water aquaculture with open net pens where fish swim freely for the entire farming-cycle. The cool, oxygen-rich waters surrounding the islands provide a healthy growing environment, optimal for trout cultivation.  

The fish are fed a formulated feed by hand. The feed formula consists primarily of fishmeal, fish oil (herring and anchovy), soybean meal, corn glutton, and a healthy diet of vitamins, minerals and beta-carotene.  
 
The pristine farm locations, combined with the proprietary feed, result in a trout of distinctive appearance, firm muscle formation and a vibrant flesh color, #26+ on the SalmoFan™. 
  
Cold Water Steelhead Trout is harvested when the trout reaches about 2-5 pounds (approximately after 18 months). Cold Water Fisheries has the capacity to harvest an average of 6 million pounds each year.
 
To ensure maximum freshness and to maintain excellent quality characteristics in every fish; each trout is harvested to order and immediately chilled and processed. Cold Water Steelhead Trout is available as; skin-on fillets and whole head-on gutted fish. The trout is shipped to stores overnight to Montreal, Toronto, NY, Boston, Detroit and Chicago. 
 
When properly prepared, Cold Water Steelhead Trout has a bright flesh color, delicate nutty taste and a fork tender texture. This succulent trout from Cold Water Fisheries is sure to have you hooked!

This month marks the 23rd Earth Day anniversary. Since the first celebration on April 22, 1970, Earth Day has provided a great opportunity to create public consciousness about water conservation, land usage and air pollution issues. 
 
As with the rest of our operations, living in harmony with the environment is a key component in all of our practices. We invite you to be part of Earth Day in your local community this April 22nd and be part of a movement to build a clean, healthy, diverse world for generations to come!

Q: Have BAP, GlobalG.A.P. and ASC developed standards for responsible salmon aquaculture?   

A: Yes they have - Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP), GlobalG.A.P. and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) have all established standards for responsible salmon aquaculture.

Launched in 2005, GlobalG.A.P. was the first to complete standards for salmon farms.

BAP completed their standards in June of 2011 and certified the first salmon farm against those standards in December 2011.

In June of 2012, the Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue announced the completion of global standards for salmon farming. The standards were then handed over to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), who oversees the certification of farms.
