Pornography reaches today's children

Written by Eric Tooley

I don't remember the exact age when my parents told me smoking was bad for you. It was very young though. When we saw people smoking, my dad said they were making bad choices. I do remember the exact age when I was offered cigarettes. I was 10 years old. I was playing with some friends down the street. They started smoking, offered me some, and gave me the typical peer pressure when I refused. I went home and told my parents immediately. My parents had prepared me for that moment. I knew what to do. To this day I have never smoked.

What is the best age to have the porn talk? Or the sex talk? It is the same as smoking. You need to do it BEFORE your child is faced with making a decision about it. You'll hear everywhere that the average age a child is first exposed to porn is eleven. I researched the source of this quote and found it in a study dated 1969!

You think the average age might be lower now? Yeah, me too.

Is Pornography
a Problem?

93% of boys and 62% of girls are exposed to Internet porn before the age of 18.

Sexting is a form of pornography in which a teen takes a sexually explicit picture of themselves and texts it to someone else.

There can be dire consequences involved in sexting. Some teens have taken their lives as a result of bullying after a sext has gotten out. Read the story of Hope Witsell.

As many as 22% of girls have sent sexually explicit photos of themselves to another person.

Teens who sext are more likely to engage in sexual activity as adolescents.

The incidence of accidental exposure to pornography online among 10-17-year-olds increased from 26% in 1999 to 34% in 2005.

The more often a teen views online porn, the more likely they are to view sex recreationally and to view women as objects.

40 million Americans are regular visitors to porn sites.
