If you are in a Word Church, where they teach Bible then you have heard the scripture quoted over and over, Mark 11:23. "Speak to the mountain!" It's a great teaching, a parable from Jesus' teachings where He taught us to "speak" to the things that stand in our way, and to expect a results!
This week we are looking at the power of words and the "authority of the Believer". Jesus through all of His ministry, was constantly teaching on the power of "words". Speak the desired results! Say what you want to happen. Watch what you say in all situations. And when you're in danger, what you say can be "critical"!
Let's take the "Jesus speaks to the waters" story. You've all heard it. Jesus and his many disciples hopped into a boat and headed across the sea, after a long day of preaching at the shoreline. Jesus was tired! I've been there. So, he went up into a covered area of the boat and curled up there to take a nap, and get some rest.
Somewhere during the voyage, the weather turned. The disciples found themselves fighting the wind and the waves, as the boat was tossed about on the sea. Now reaching the deepest part of the sea as they crossed the middle, the water from the waves began to break over the sides of the boat, and they were now beginning to take on water. Given the distance to land from where they were, the disciples began to fear, thinking they would sink before they could reach the safely of the shallow waters or dry land.
THE FIRST WORDS FROM YOUR MOUTH
"Out of the abundance of that which fills the heart, the mouth doth speak." [Luke 6:45, Matthew 12:34]
What is the very first words that Jesus hears, upon waking, that comes out of the mouths of his trusted men of faith and power? What is the very first thing that these guys say, to the Son of GOD, after a long afternoon where He had just taught them on faith, and on the principles of sowing and reaping ... "the seed principle"?
"Master, we're all going to die!"
Jesus had only just taught one of His most famous messages, "The Parable of the Sower", and He had to explain that one to them afterwards. Then He later taught that afternoon on "The Parable of the Seed" and "The Parable of the Mustard Seed", again to emphasize the basics on "seed faith". Always, after these messages, Jesus had to get alone with His disciples and again explain to them the meaning of these parables. And He loved teaching them, but they just - weren't - getting it!
Now, they're out on the water in the deeper parts of the crossing, and the wind and waves are causing water to begin to accumulate in the boat. These guys go and wake him up from his deep sleep, and the first words of faith they have for the Son of GOD is that they are all about to die! "Master, we perish!"
Jesus, realizing that their words and their lack of faith had put them into a great deal of danger, immediately rose up and rebuked the wind and the sea. He didn't need to do a big scene like Charleton Heston in "The Ten Commandments", and there was no fire and lightening! He just calmly, but firmly said to the wind and the sea, "Hush!" And then He said in a much softer voice, "Be still." Immediately, as if following His exact instructions, the seas did just that! It all stopped! Even the boat, still rocking from the waves before, began to settle in the now quiet waters of the deep.
The disciples stood there, staring in silence. They could not believe what they had just seen take place before their very eyes! Looking at Jesus one moment ... and then back at the sea, now calm and peaceful ... they were in total shock!
Jesus was rather upset at their stubbornness, and their unbelief. After an entire day of teaching on the subject, and the hours of one-on-one explanation afterwards, they still did not get it! They still had no idea what had just happened! Jesus heart sank. He had only just selected these men, and He had to ask Himself, "Father, are these truly the men that You wanted?"
As they watched Him, now looking off in the distance in disappointment, they could tell by His countenance that He was angry. He was frustrated with them, and they knew it! And all that could be heard was the gentle sound of the waters, and the breezes that would gently blow for a moment, and then grow calm once again. You could hear the gentle lapping of the water against the boat.
And after a short time in thought, Jesus turned again and looked across the faces of these new disciples in disappointment. These are the twelve that He had only just chosen the day before. He looked into their eyes and could easily see their shame. What He could not understand was why they had just ...
With a sound of disappointment, His voice range loud and clear as He said, "Why ... are you afraid?" With only the sound of a gentle wind, and the flapping of the sails on the masts, His voice could be heard clear across the waters. As He just spoke, it cut deep to the core of their being. They all heard Him clearly. His Words went deep into their souls. And each man knew that they had "messed up", though just how or what they had done wrong, they could not yet grasp.
Still nothing but the loose flapping of the sails in the breeze was now heard. Each of the disciples looked at one another, and then hung their heads low in shame. Jesus voice that day was very bold, and it was powerful! You could feel it as He spoke the words! And they had not see this side of Him before. It demanded the attention of parts inside of them that they didn't even know existed! And He had their full and undivided attention at this very moment.
Then, as His countenance changed from anger and disappointment, to one of confusion, the voice of a teacher, the One that they had already begun to know and love so well came forth. "HOW ... is it ..." he said to them in unbelief, "that you have ... no ... faith?"
All was quiet on the boat that afternoon as the disciples stood there, not really knowing how to answer. "Have a seat." Jesus said to them, with patience, as He began to walk through their midst. As He passed each one by, He touched them on the shoulder, or patted them on the back, and maybe even roughed up the hair of one or two ... making them again feel comforted, and a part of something more wonderful than words could describe.
And as as the boat sat there, quietly, in the waters of the deep, you could hear Jesus voice across the sea, as He began again, lovingly and patiently instructing these men in whom the hope of His ministry would soon be placed. And as He spoke, they all wondered of what the days to come would bring, for what manner of man was this that even the wind and seas would obey Him? And as He filled their hearts with hope and of His dreams for the future, they listened eager to learn from the Man Who even the wind and the seas obey.
READING ASSIGNMENT: 1. Mark 3:7-4:41
2. Matthew 8:18-27
Study on this, and let Holy Spirit talk to you about it. Meditate on it. There are "Kingdom things" to learn from this, if you will take the time. Next week, we will begin from here. Until then, ask yourself about what you have learned of faith, and the things that GOD has taught you. Consider what you "know to do", but have not.
