IntheNews HELLO FROM PRINCIPAL LOWE

Hi Parents,

We're well into our school year and now is the time to reflect on your child's organizational skills and how you can assist. If you can help them establish effective patterns for organization now, it will pay off throughout the school year.

When your child comes home from school, have a specific area where school items are placed.  Knowing exactly where to put things helps to develop a routine. Next, set up a time and a place that is dedicated to school work. It could be the kitchen table while you are fixing dinner, etc. Even if your child does not have specific homework, this is a time for them to reflect on what they learned during the day and articulate that learning to you. If your child can't remember or says "Nothing" (the most famous response!), then prompt them to look in his or her planner or review the weekly email you have received from the team about what the students are learning that week. Also, this is a great time to have your child read aloud to you to practice reading fluency.

When you have finished with the dedicated school time, have your child pack their backpack with exactly what is needed for the following day. This prevents homework from being left on the counter! It also gives your child a sense of security knowing that everything is in order for the next day.

If you ever have any questions regarding your child and their developmental or academic progress, be sure to reach out to your child's teacher or grade level counselor. We are always happy to assist you with anything we can!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,

Robin Lowe
Executive Principal

Your child's teacher will meet with you to go over goals for the school year based on Fall 2016 Assessments, observations from the teacher, and conversations with your child.

Thank you for partnering with us for your child's success!

Conferences for Middle School are designed to be on demand, and at the point of need, to best serve our students. For parents wishing to meet and do a short check in with teachers, we invite you to our Middle School Conference Open House.

If you're needing more than a five minute check-in regarding your child's progress, please email the teacher directly and request a meeting.

Questions? Email Katie Gustafson, Middle School Assistant Principal at kgustafson@flagstaffacademy.org.

Thank you for partnering with us for your child's success!
2016-2017 Gifted and Talented Parent Nomination Process

Flagstaff Academy will be conducting Gifted and Talented screenings for all 3rd and 4th grade students in October. At this time, parents of students in grades K-8, other than 3rd and 4th graders, who wish to nominate their student for GT testing may do so.

To nominate your student, please visit the Front Office and pick up a District nomination form, as well as a parent input form. All forms must be returned to the Front Office by Wednesday, September 21. Incomplete nomination forms will not be accepted. Student records will then be evaluated, and testing needs determined. Please do not contact homeroom teachers.

If you have any questions, please contact Abby Rooks at arooks@flagstaffacademy.org.

Charting the Galápagos Islands
Spring Break 2017

The Galápagos Islands are most famous for the profound discoveries of Charles Darwin. Carry on that scientific tradition as you learn about the unique species of birds and other animals that call the islands home...many of which can't be found anywhere else in the world. On mainland Ecuador, experience the local culture in Quito. Independence Plaza and the Intinian Museum provide social context to the biological wonders of this fascinating country.

Come to the first informational meeting about this trip:
When: Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 4:15 p.m.
Where: Mrs. Ledbetter's room D24.

Only 6 spots left and there will be a price increase as of October 1! Locking in your reservation now ensures the lowest possible price!

Want to know more about the trip? Check out the website:

 Volunteer
Calling All Dragon Volunteers!

Students love seeing their parents involved and invested in their school community! The good news is that we have many volunteer opportunities for you to be involved. We will be working on getting a volunteer database set up this year, but in the meantime, we will be using Signup Genius as a way for our volunteers to sign up for different volunteer needs.

Some immediate volunteer opportunities:
  • Health Clerk Office. Volunteering in the Health Room requires 30-60 minutes a shift. Shifts may be one (or more) days a week, Monday-Friday, between the hours of 1:00-2:00 p.m. Ideally, one person would take the same shift throughout the school year, to keep the health office a familiar place for students.·
  • Front Office. Several volunteers are needed every month to help with general office help. Volunteer needs include cutting, copying, sorting, inventory, etc.
  • Room Parent. Room parents needed for the following teachers: Ms. Saam and Ms. Gianetti. **Please contact Jeannie at jtorres@flagstaffacademy.org if you have any questions about being a room parent.
  • Playground Project: Looking for a parent or volunteer who has good woodworking experience for a playground project. We are looking to refinish/repair our benches with some special touches. Contact Kevin Pugh, Dean of School Culture, at kpugh@flagstaffacademy.org for more information.
If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up at this link:

We love and appreciate parent and family volunteers because we want to share the joy of teaching and learning with our community. Every hour you spend adds value to your student's experience, and the greater school community. We depend upon your support and leadership to realize our vision. This past year our school benefited from over 10,000 volunteer hours!

Volunteers of the Month
Every month, we will be recognizing our volunteers by holding a drawing for our "Volunteers of the Month." Thank you for everything you do every day, to make Flagstaff a wonderful place to learn!

Contact Jeannie Torres, Volunteer Coordinator, at jtorres@flagstaffacademy.org with any questions.
A New Year for 100-Mile Club!

We're excited to get started this fall with a new and improved 100-Mile Club, now in its third year, and which is now a part of our fabulous Dragon Flight. Last year we had 292 people register and ran over 11,000 miles. Let's top that this year!

The program will be the same as last year, with the fun incentives, group morning runs, and occasional afternoon runs, as well as weekend gatherings. The difference is that last year's 100-Mile club was the result of a grant, which we don't have this year. That is part of the reason for the increase in registration price, as we are absorbing the cost of this great program for staffing and club resources. Be on the look out for after school fun runs and off site family runs!

About the 100-Mile Club: The 100 Mile Club is a club open to all students at Flagstaff Academy. The 100 Mile Club gets students moving before, during, and after school with the end goal of reaching 100 miles by the end of the year. After they register, students are welcome to come to any and all practices!

Morning Practices are M, T, Th, and F from 7:15 - 7:45 a.m.

Parents and Guardians!
In order for 100-mile club to be successful we are in need of parent volunteers. Please sign-up here to help!

You can also set up a filter in your email account to help ensure our messages do not end up in your Junk or Spam folders.
