HELLO FROM PRINCIPAL LOWE
|
Happy Friday everyone! I wanted to share a fantastic article I came across this week about some of the very real stresses of middle school, from both the standpoint of the student and the parents. Nothing is harder than coping with a "tweenager" - those kids between the ages of 10 and 16. My favorite saying about the teen years is: "Raising teenagers is like trying to nail jello to a tree" - a futile effort! But seriously, these are the years that you need to be the most involved. Know who their friends are, monitor their social media, and most importantly, talk to them on a deeper level than what they did at school that day. There are some awesome resources that are called " moral dilemma cards." They have various scenarios that are great at breaking the ice when you want to talk to your child about a difficult subject. Sometimes, using those cards and putting it a "What do you think about it?" type of conversation, it is easy to for everyone involved. Whatever you do, hang in there. This too shall pass. Not without some wonderful laughter, a few tears, and lots of gray hair, but it will. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help! As you can tell, things are bustling here at school - new electives in the middle school, our exciting Innovations program, which is just getting underway in the elementary school, CHAMPS for classroom management, and our new Aquos Touch Screens in every classroom. So many exciting new opportunities for students and our teachers!
Don't forget Monday is Labor Day and we will out of school, so enjoy your three day weekend! I hope you find time to relax and have fun with your family. See you next Tuesday! Robin Lowe Executive Principal

A New Year for 100-Mile Club!
We're excited to get started this fall with a new and improved 100-Mile Club, now in its third year, and which is now a part of our fabulous Dragon Flight. Last year we had 292 people register and ran over 11,000 miles. Let's top that this year!
The program will be the same as last year, with the fun incentives, group morning runs, and occasional afternoon runs, as well as weekend gatherings. The difference is that last year's 100-Mile club was the result of a grant, which we don't have this year. That is part of the reason for the increase in registration price, as we are absorbing the cost of this great program for staffing and club resources. Be on the look out for after school fun runs and off site family runs!
About the 100-Mile Club: The 100 Mile Club is a club open to all students at Flagstaff Academy. The 100 Mile Club gets students moving before, during, and after school with the end goal of reaching 100 miles by the end of the year. After they register, students are welcome to come to any and all practices!
Morning Practices are M, T, Th, and F from 7:15 - 7:45 a.m.
Practices will begin Thursday, September 8.

Calling All Dragon Volunteers!
Students love seeing their parents involved and invested in their school community! The good news is that we have many volunteer opportunities for you to be involved. We will be working on getting a volunteer database set up this year, but in the meantime, we will be using Signup Genius as a way for our volunteers to sign up for different volunteer needs.
Some immediate volunteer opportunities: -
Library Media Center: Our LMC staff needs help with the checkout counter while the media assistant is teaching the class. If you are computer-savvy and enjoy interacting with students, this is a great volunteer opportunity for you!
-
Health Clerk Office: Ms. Moen, our health clerk, would like to have one or two parents to cover her lunch break from 12:30 p.m.-1p.m. daily. Ideally, she would like the same parent(s) to commit to the same day every week for the 2016-17 school year.
-
Front Office: Several volunteers are needed every month to help with general office help. Volunteer needs include cutting, copying, sorting, inventory, etc.
-
Playground Project: Looking for a parent or volunteer who has good woodworking experience for a playground project. We are looking to refinish/repair our benches with some special touches. Contact Kevin Pugh, Dean of School Culture, at kpugh@flagstaffacademy.org for more information.
If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up at this link:
We love and appreciate parent and family volunteers because we want to share the joy of teaching and learning with our community. Every hour you spend adds value to your student's experience, and the greater school community. We depend upon your support and leadership to realize our vision. This past year our school benefited from over 10,000 volunteer hours!
Volunteers of the Month
Every month, we recognize our volunteers by holding a drawing for our "Volunteers of the Month." Thank you for everything you do every day, to make Flagstaff a wonderful place to learn!

2nd Through Fifth Graders -
It's Recorder Time!
Please note that Recorders are for 2nd through 5th Graders!
To help us sound our very best, this year we will all be using the same Yamaha model YRS-24B. If your child has a recorder from last year, please consider the option of buying another so that one recorder may be left at home and one kept at school; It's one less thing to remember on music day!
Also, to help minimize the impact of the cold and flu season, each student will use their own recorder. We will be implementing a strict no sharing policy.
Please look in your Friday Folders this week for the Recorder Order Form. You can also download and print the form and return it with $8.00 cash/check (payable to Flagstaff Academy) before Friday, September 9th. Your student's homeroom teacher will collect the money and recorders will be delivered shortly after.
