Southern SAWG Seeks New Board of Directors Candidates

Nominate yourself, or someone else (with their permission). The Board of Directors is responsible for establishing the long-range program focus for Southern SAWG, and for maintaining a strong and vibrant organization. Specific responsibilities include providing support and oversight for funding development, financial management, strategic planning and evaluation, and hiring and supervising the Executive Director. The Board of Directors is a governing body that supports and oversees programmatic activities carried out by staff members.

Each Board member is elected to a three-year term, and is required to serve on at least one committee. Board members should be prepared to provide leadership as officers, committee chairs or members, or participants in a Board-appointed task force. Experience with governance of nonprofit organizations and/or with strategic thinking on a multi-state regional level is valuable in this position as is experience with funding development and fundraising.

Candidates for nomination to the Board must be knowledgeable and supportive of SSAWG's mission and goals (http://www.ssawg.org/about/ ), live within the Southern region (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia) and be willing to serve a complete term. Since Southern SAWG does not now have Board members from Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, or Tennessee, candidates with proven skills from those states could be especially welcome.

Additional information about Southern SAWG, the Board of Directors, and the nomination process is available by contacting Ryan Neal, Chair of the Board Development Committee, at (804) 785-9401 or by email at Ryan.Neal@heifer.org.

New candidates for the Board must submit a letter of interest, and a resume with two references by September 15, 2014 to Ryan Neal via, email Ryan.Neal@heifer.org or USPS mail (13 Crappie Cove Road, Perryville, AR 72126).

Candidates will be contacted by a Board Development Committee member for a telephone interview before the Board meets in late October. Newly elected Board members will begin their terms with the late winter/early spring Board meeting in 2015.

On the weekend of May 17-19, 1991 at the Highlander Center in New Market, Tennessee, 25 people representing 17 organizations founded the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (SAWG). Their intent was to give Southerners a say in how they wanted to solve agricultural and rural problems in the South, and give farmers the lead role in the process of making Southern agriculture more sustainable.

That was 23 years ago this week and so much has happened in those twenty three years. I was so excited that I decided to write a poem about it. With the help of our staff, board and volunteers we created a little YouTube video. Please take a minute and twenty-eight seconds and check it out.
