------------------------

2015 marked the 400th year since the birth of Rimpa style of painting in Japan.  To celebrate this anniversary a number of exhibitions were held in prestigious venues and museums all over Japan.  What a great way of rediscovering and admiring one's own cultural heritage!

The Rimpa style is believed to have started in Kyoto during the 17th century and it is one of the major historical schools of Japanese painting.  Used in wall hangings, folding screens, ceramics and laquer, the Rimpa style also greatly influenced the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements in Europe and in North America. It also influenced symbolist painters like Gustav Klimt, impressionists such as Manet and Monet and post-impressionists like Whistler.

Last year we had the pleasure of receiving Yaeko Kurimata, for a 5-day course on Japanese Pictorial Art. Founder and owner of Faux Arts Deisgn in Tokyo, Yaeko is an accomplished, internationally renowned Japanese decorative painting artist, specialised in Japanese painting and passionate about Rimpa Art.

Students had the opportunity to discover and explore the wonderful world of Rimpa as they each worked on their beautiful panel that Yaeko taught during the five days.
Without realizing it, we were also celebrating the 400th anniversary of Rimpa Art at our studio... !
