THE GREAT CABINET DEBATE:
US custom cabinets vs. RTA imported cabinets
The Great Cabinet Debate It has been and will continue to be discussed - Imported RTA modular cabinets vs. US custom cabinetry. We've thrown a wrinkle into this debate with our custom-grade RTA cabinets. In the past, it was simple: US custom cabinets = Top quality, endless options, superior workmanship and materials, yet more costly. RTA imported cabinets = Low quality, limited choices, inferior workmanship and materials, yet at a substantially lower cost. This week's newsletter will further debate US custom cabinets vs. RTA imported cabinets and where O'Neil Custom-Grade RTA Cabinets fit in:

| US CUSTOM VS. IMPORTED RTA CABINETS |
US Custom Cabinets
Pros - More efficient use of space since double width stiles can be avoided. - Many wood material options. Most of the wood will be treated and handled here in the US reducing issues like warping
- More "design driven" with no limitation on cabinet sizes. Gives homeowner more control over what they want for the finished product - Almost an endless choice of door styles, color finishes, moldings, accessories & hardware - Finished product can be nearly flawless if you are using a very experienced cabinet maker Cons - Cost, cost, and....cost!!! A true custom design and installed kitchen for example is extremely expensive, costing $350+ per linear foot installed. - Time consuming. Always the possibility of lead time on special wood and finish materials. Installation will also take longer with custom cabinets.

Imported RTA Cabinets
Pros - Price. Typical price for RTA cabinets is $100-150 per linear foot. - Ease of installation. Typical RTA cabinets are pre-fabricated with cam-lock style construction for easy pre-assembly of the cabinet carcass and door/frame prior to installation - Less time consuming; due to the cabinets already being pre-fab the are already "ready-to- assemble(RTA) Cons - Lower grade/hazardous materials such as formaldehyde are used - Inferior training of mfg workforce leads to inconsistencies in final product - Lower grade hardware such as side- mounted drawer glides & specifications such as 1/2" Grade C plywood are used - Looser mfg tolerances used - Mass produced and stored in warehouses so sizes, styles, and color choices are very limited - Sub-standard environment can lead to issues such as warping

Quality &Durability
Even though our cabinets our mass produced overseas, we have incorporated many of the US custom cabinet specifications into our cabinet designs and have required the manufacturer to follow them. Thus we have produced
cabinets that are extremely durable high in quality:
.
New Construction
Our new cabinet construction features traditional all wood dowel inserts with NO cam lock hardware used. Combine with wood glue for the most durable cabinets on the market.. Even without glue the cabinet carcass will be extremely strong and will have a custom look without any exposed cam locks |
Natural Wood Material
We use 100% Kiln Dried North American Maple wood for all our doors, drawer fronts, and frames. Our US wood supplier uses the best kiln dry facility, which helps reduce the risk of warping. Most importers use birch wood and/or will use particle board for the center panel of the door, not us. They also may not properly kiln dry the wood leading to warping issues. |

Drawer Glides
Heavy-duty, anti-slam, soft-close, under mounted drawer glides - More stable and hold much more weight than standard drawer glides. Soon we will incorporate new anti-slam door hinges for all of our cabinets!
Dovetail Drawer Box
All of our drawer boxes have traditional dovetail construction, more durable and stronger than cam lock or screw on |
Finish
We use only the best paint finish: Valspar catalyzed conversion varnish, the most advanced technology to date. It is more resistant to cracks, stains, shrinkage, and color decay. A much stronger and more durable finish than standard lacquer or laminate stain finishes |
Custom Look
A strong line of molding accessories to choose from for that finished custom look. Many RTA cabinet importers will have the basic crown molding and fillers.... not us! |
