Greetings!
The other day a fellow Youth Minister friend of mine, Brian, posted on Facebook an article from a parent's point of view called "Why I made my Teenager go to church." You can read the whole article here (http://sojo.net/blogs/2013/05/06/why-i-made-my-teenager-go-church). Now whether your of the opinion of forced participation in church or elected participation, I think the author (the mom) brought up some really great points that I wanted to share with you.
She lists at least five reasons:
- I want my daughters to know that we can recover from yelling at each other (which we had) and disagreeing. We can move on, and a quiet, sacred space is a good place to start.
- I want my daughter to know that sometimes you have to show up, even when you are exhausted.
- I want her to know that she can question and feel vulnerable and cry - and she doesn't always have to do that all alone.
- (I want her) to know that those people working to confront poverty, inequality, and environmental injustice in our church are vulnerable souls, but they are acting for the greater good in spite of their questions.
- (I want her to know) we may not know why we are here, but we can pass along a little light to others on the journey. And maybe that's what we need to create a little heaven on earth.
I highly encourage you to read the article and consider why it is that you might bring someone to church with you. I know these reasons shared resonated with my own reasons that I feel like church is the most important thing you can be a part of in your life.
Grace and peace to you this week! |

LAST YOUTH GROUP for 2012-2013 School Year Wednesday, May 15th 5:30-8:00 This is it! The school year is coming to a close, and so will the weekly youth group gatherings. Come dressed for fun, and possibly getting wet, because both will likely happen! Nick is already planning some fun games, so be sure to be there this Wednesday. |
SUNDAY SCHOOL THIS WEEK LET'S WELCOME THE NEW INCOMING CLASS! Beginning this Sunday, the newly baptized class of 5th graders (incoming 6th graders) will be joining us in the Loft during Sunday School. They will be invited to participate in all the Youth group activities over the summer as a "sneak peak". They will "officially" be part of the group in the fall when we move everyone up. Do you remember back to your first time coming to youth group? You were probably probably both excited to come, as well as a little uneasy about it. Let's be sure to warmly welcome them on their big day. |
MISSION TEAM Points / Balance Due What a haul at the Ladies Brunch! The workers brought in $400 in tips! 1/2 of that goes into the general fundraising for everyone, the other 1/2 is split between them, and put into their personal mission accounts. Well done! Information regarding what you have earned, paid, and the balance due will be sent out soon. |
HELP DESIGN MISSION TRIP T-SHIRT Designs due by Sun June 2 at 9:45 am Hey, all you artsy folks... would you like to design the mission trip t-shirt for this year? Anyone on the mission team interested can submit their design to Lorrie by Sunday June 2. We need them before 9:45 that morning, as we will be voting on them during Sunday School. Your design can be sketched, painted, done on a computer, or any other method. (Dont worry, sketches can be cleaned up by a graphic artist before they are printed.)
