March 2, 2013
Greetings!,

Polly learning to sew
National Quilting Day is Saturday, March 16. In recognition, we'd like to know how you learned to quilt! I learned to sew early on from my mother, and as a grandmother, I'm passing that skill (and hopefully that love) on to my granddaughter, Polly.
30-Second Poll: How Did You Learn to Quilt?

The Quilt Show is celebrating by offering free access to all their shows on their site from March 15 through March 17. That includes my two shows, episodes 313 and 601 which feature a tour of my home and some detailed hand-piecing instruction.
Visit The Quilt Show.

We've been excited to hear from so many of you who will be making our 2013 BOM quilt, Solstice. The Studio staff told me that many of you have asked about additional colorways and they finally wore me down!  We now have a total of three color options for Solstice quilt kits! You can find more details in the article below.

If you've ever thought you'd like to visit India, I encourage you to consider the quilting trip to Western India
that I'll be hosting next January.

The itinerary is incredible, with fabric shopping in ancient bazaars, the opportunity to learn embroidery techniques from master artisans, a visit to the studio of a world-renowned block-printer, and the chance to visit the Calico Museum and experience the Ahmedabad kite festival! We'll have our own guide and transportation, and even a special project I've created just for the trip!

Foundation Piecing Essentials
We've gathered together the supplies that any quilter needs if she's going to foundation piece or make quilts using templates. (Solstice uses both these techniques.) This is a great way to get everything you need conveniently and at a little savings.

Foundation Piecing Essentials
This kit includes a pack of 100 sheets of Carol Doak foundation paper, the indispensable 12-inch Add-a-Quarter ruler, and a postcard featuring my Windows quilt (helpful for folding paper foundations back away from the fabric before trimming.)

Template Piecing Essentials

Template Piecing Essentials

This excellent kit includes some specialty products that can be hard to find, including: semi-transparent template plastic (not shown), a 1/16" hole punch for marking seam lines or intersections, and three of my favorite marking tools -- Clover Tailor's Chalk, a Jinny Beyer Studio mechanical pencil, and two ultra-fine Sharpie markers.  My Perfect Piecer is also included in the Essentials Plus kit.

Solstice Classroom: Soft-Edge Piecing
Have you visited the Solstice Classroom? We've created this dedicated space to collect videos, tips and reference materials -- detailed information that will help you through the pattern.

This month, you'll find information on the optional soft-edge piecing technique for Block 2.
Soft-edge piecing lets you preserve beautiful elements from a fabric design in your patchwork block.

The instructions from the pattern are posted in the Classroom, along with a video where I step you through the process, share some sewing tips, and introduce you to some of my favorite tools for the process.

Anytime during the year, you can visit the Solstice Classroom for an introduction or a refresher to the techniques you'll use in creating this masterpiece quilt.

And if you have questions along the way, you can email me at
askjinny@jinnybeyer.com. I'll do my best to answer the most common questions in this space.

SolsticeNew Block & Technique for 2013 BOM Quilt, Solstice

This month's block can be made traditionally (right) or incorporating Jinny's soft-edge piecing technique (left).

Don't miss this month's compass block pattern -- it introduces a fun quiltmaking technique I developed. Soft-edge piecing is a hybrid appliqu-patchwork technique that lets you showcase a beautiful fabric motif in a patchwork block.

The technique is optional and the pattern includes complete instructions.

If you missed last month's information, don't worry! The download page includes all the materials released so far.
