January 5, 2013
Greetings!,

This issue marks an ending and a beginning.

Shenandoah Baskets, our 2012 BOM quilt pattern series, ends this month. You have until January 31 to download the patterns free, so don't wait! And please send us pictures of your quilt if you're working on one.

The beginning is a sneak peek at our 2013 BOM quilt -- Solstice. The first pattern will be available in our February newsletter issue and kits should be available shortly after that.

As usual, I'll be traveling and teaching internationally this year: Australia in the spring, and Sweden and Bali in the fall. For more information on my Australian itinerary (including Canberra, Swan Hill and Ulladulla!), contact Miss Sampson's. I'd love to have you join me on the Bali trip. There are a few places left. Visit Sew Many Places for details.

Lastly, don't miss my latest fabric collection, Renaissance Garden. There's a free quilt pattern and video demonstrating the fun, hybrid patchwork-appliqu technique I use in the design.

Enjoy!

All-New Renaissance Garden
I had great fun designing the fabrics and quilt for my latest collection, Renaissance Garden.

The collection includes 33 fabrics, including a fabulous large-scale paisley design. In fact, I'm thrilled with how each and every print turned out. One looks like a faded canvas, another a glowing pottery glaze, and yet another that looks like a leaf print where only the veins remain!

Check your local quilt shop for the fabrics, or visit our website. All the fabrics are available by the yard and we have an enticing fat quarter bundle available, too!

Renaissance Garden is a brand-new quilt I created for the fabric collection. Compass blocks are set off with a simple chain setting block.

The free pattern includes detailed instructions on my soft-edge piecing technique which combines patchwork and appliqu in the blocks. The technique allows you to take full advantage of a beautiful fabric design motif. A more traditional option with fussy cut patches is also included in the pattern.

The quilt kit is available in two color options and two sizes.

Soft-Edge Piecing is a technique I developed to allow quilters to showcase a beautiful fabric design in a patchwork block.

The book I wrote exploring the technique is out of print, so I put together detailed instructions in the Renaissance Garden quilt pattern and in a new video.

The video demonstrates each step in the process, using the Renaissance Garden block as an example. It's not difficult, but it can really enhance the look of your quilt.

The video is available now on the website. I hope it inspires you to give the technique a try.

Diamonds -- And a Great Ruler -- Are a Quilter's Best Friend!
In the last year or so, I've been revisiting the diamond shape in patchwork, exploring design possibilities. For our recent shop hop, I created two quilts that feature the 60 diamond.

Although I love my templates and scissors, I had to admit that rotary cutting fabric strips and patches was much faster. But I soon became convinced that there wasn't a good ruler available to streamline cutting, trimming and marking diamond patches. (Trust me, I tried a bunch!)

So, I designed the Jinny Beyer Perfect Cut 60 Diamond Ruler to do it all:

  • it's long enough to cut strips from fabric folded twice;
  • it cuts 60 diamonds or equilateral triangles;
  • it has a blunt point so you can trim fabric points for easy matching;
  • and it has holes in the perfect places to mark your seam intersection points.

Plus you can easily see the lines on light, dark and multi-colored fabric!

I put together a video demonstrating the ruler. You can see it on my website

I'd love for you to give my new ruler a try, so I'm offering it to you for $18 -- a 10% discount -- for just two weeks.

Crayon Box and Alhambra are the two quilts I designed for our Quilters' Quest shop hop. Both were tremendously popular, so I've decided to make kits available on our website.

Crayon Box is a tumbling blocks variation, made with a wide variety of red, yellow, gold, orange, brown and blue fabrics. The sample I made is super-scrappy with more than 100 different prints! The kit includes a wide variety of fabrics (but not 100!) for a similar look, and I encourage you to add coordinating fabrics from your stash.

Alhambra is a very exotic-looking quilt: the border print hexagons add a wonderful intricacy to the design. Surprisingly, it sews together very simply in vertical rows, avoiding set-in seams!

Introducing Solstice, our Free 2013 BOM
I've created an exciting block-of-the-month quilt for you for 2013.

Solstice features thirteen compass blocks, twinkling in a beautiful setting.

If you've never made a compass block before, fear not! We'll start with the easiest blocks and I'll include a special tip each month that I promise will develop your skills and put these blocks within your reach. Many of the patterns include foundation piecing options, too.

The pattern begins in our February newsletter and is free only for our subscribers as a special thank you.

Kits will be available at jinnybeyer.com soon! Click here for details.
