Commissioners Expected to Vote on Municipal Building Proposals
At September 8th Meeting

The Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on one of seven proposals for replacement and/or renovation of the Township's municipal buildings at the Board's regular meeting on Monday, September 8, 2014. The Board is considering various alternatives for renovating or replacing the Administration Building, the Police Station and the Library.

As I have reported previously, public discussion on this issue began when the Property Committee gave a public presentation in February 2010. Since then, the Board has heard at least six additional public presentations and held numerous meetings specifically intended to receive public comment. Initially, our consideration focused on the Township Building and Police Station, but was expanded as the condition of the Library deteriorated.

The Board is considering seven options.

Outrageous!

Urge PennDot to Reconsider
Its Decision Not to Repave

Marple & Darby Creek Roads in 2014

Despite multiple assurances, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has informed the Township that Marple Road and Darby Creek Roads will not be repaved this year. PennDot has instead stated that these streets -- which are in horrible, virtually undrivable, condition and need immediate repaving -- will be repaved in 2015.

This is completely unacceptable.  I have received more than 100 emails complaining about the condition of these roads since January 2013, including comments from residents as well as non-residents who have attempted to drive on them.

The Township, other commissioners and I have contacted PennDot, State Rep. Vitali, State Senator Leach and others to complain, but we have not received any indication that PennDot will reconsider.

I have therefore begun an online petition. Please click here to sign the Petition, and forward the link to your friends so that we can express our outrage over this decision.

While the Township, other commissioners and I are trying to persuade PennDot and Governor Corbett to reconsider, public opinion matters too. So please sign the Petition and get your friends and neighbors to do so as well.

Please note that the Township is not permitted to pave state highways, which are the exclusive responsibility of PennDot.

Of course, I will keep you informed about the situation.

Haverford Rain Garden Initiative

The Haverford Township Environmental Advisory Committee's (EAC) "100 Rain Gardens in 10 Years Initiative," or "Hav-a-Rain-Garden," has received three recent grant awards that will help promote green stormwater management in the Township. Residents interested in learning how to host a rain garden in their yards (possibly at no cost), or how to build a rain garden, or to volunteer to help build or maintain a rain garden, may complete a survey at the EAC website

The EAC has also scheduled training sessions on Saturday, September 20 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and on Sunday, September 21, 2014 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. the Community Recreation Center at the Reserve on Darby Road. These sessions will include a brief presentation about rain gardens, followed by a hands-on tutorial at the demonstration garden being installed next to the grass field at the Reserve.
