A Quiet Summer
Thankfully, it's been a quiet summer in the 4th Ward and in the Township. After the excitement of the U.S. Open, the Township quickly returned to its "normal" state. That said, there have been a couple of issues which I continue to deal with, including:
Peco / Power Outages
I recognize that "normal" has meant multiple power outages for some residents (including my family) and I am working to address the issue with Peco. Unfortunately, many of the problems we are continuing to experience are tree-related, making it harder to craft a global solution. I conveyed to Peco all of the comments I have received and will continue to do so; representatives from the company also receive this newsletter, and thus are aware of all of your concerns.
Paving / Aqua / Marple Road
The recent Aqua project generated many complaints, all of which were conveyed to Aqua. Aqua's president, Steve Tagert, responded directly to many residents. Aqua also paved all roads on which it worked, consistent with our ordinances, and our Codes and Public Works Department have monitored their activities to assure that they comply.
Aqua has also announced that, beginning the week of august 19th, it will install 4,657 feet of iron main along Marple Road between Darby Creek and Darby Roads. Although the road will be closed in the construction area, residents will have access to their homes. The final paving restoration will be completed in October. Click here to read the flyer about the project.
Penndot / Paving
Penndot has informed the Township that Darby Creek Road is included on the list of roads to be paved in 2014. In addition, as I reported earlier this year, Marple Road is also scheduled for paving in 2014. I do not know how, or if, the Aqua project will impact Penndot's plans.
I will continue to serve as a conduit between 4th Ward residents and the utilities.

Township Finances - A Positive Report
At the Commissioners' July work session, Township Manager Larry Gentile presented the 2013 Midyear Financial Report, which showed that revenues are exceeding projections and expenses are slightly less than projected. The report demonstrates the effectiveness of various cost-cutting measures instituted over the past few years, as well as the fine work of the Township staff, including Finance Director Aimee Cuthbertson.
It is also important to note that only 18 cents of every property tax dollar Haverford residents pay goes to the Township. The School District receives 68 cents of every property tax dollar, and the County receives 14 cents of each tax dollar, as outlined in the presentation. Click here to review the presentation.

E-Waste Collection Yields Record Results
The electronic waste collection event in late June yielded a record amount of materials. According to Jayne Young of the Pennsylvania Resources Council, which co-sponsored the event, the collection was the best they have ever had -- 42,318 pounds of e-waste were diverted from the normal trash stream, saving all of us substantial tax dollars.
Congratulations to the Township Environmental Advisory Committee and to the Haverford Township staff for an excellent event!
