Missionary to France

Greetings from Paris, France! Thanks for taking the time to check out my newsletter! Here are a few special happenings from September and October.

Enjoy!
Penhurst Retreat in England
Shannon and Suzanne at Penhurst
"Serving as Singles" was the title of the retreat that Shannon Buckner (AGWM Missionary at Mattersey Hall/England) and I attended from 2-4 September. It was a first for both Shannon and I and for all the other participants as well. We all appreciated Tim Herbert, a single mission worker, who led us in a 48-hour guided retreat to encourage us as single mission workers. Penhurst Retreat Centre is located in beautiful East Sussex. Here we are having tea and preparing for the TEAM Together Reception at our Europe Together Retreat.
Europe Together Retreat
Fountain of Neptune in Bologna.
San Luca Arcade in Bologna.
Bellaria, Italy was the new location for our triennial retreat held 18-22 September. Before arriving in Bellaria, I took a few days off to visit Bologna, home to the oldest university in the world founded in 1088. I arrived late Monday evening. All day Tuesday and Wednesday morning up until I took the train to Bellaria, I rode a bicycle all over the town. I felt right at home as I rode around with people of all ages on bicycles. I got a lot of exercise and I saw all the major sites. It was fun.

I took a train to Bellaria on Wednesday and arrived at a beach town. Right away I felt it was the perfect atmosphere to relax. Not only was the retreat held in a new location, but it also set a new direction for our Europe missionary family with new leaders and a new geographical configuration.
Visiting San Marino.
Beach in Bellaria.

The weather was perfect for walking along the beach. Friday, most of us got on buses to visit San Marino. It was fun to walk, eat gelato, drink great Italian coffee, and catch up with colleagues I hadn't seen in quite a while.

Saturday evening, Shannon Buckner and I hosted what we called the TEAM Together reception for single and married missionaries working together on teams. Our goal is to emphasize a biblical theology of singleness by affirming single missionaries and encouraging biblical relationships between both married and single team members. We were very encouraged by the participation of between forty and fifty colleagues. We got off to a great start and since then we have planned for a TEAM Together core team meeting to be held 22-24 November in Paris.
The Bridge Open Doors & Life Group Kick-Off
Life Group sign-ups and the Open Doors Event succeeded each other this year on Sunday 22 Sept. and 29 Sept. Actually, Life Group sign-ups were on both days, but the added feature for Open Doors were games for the children and greater opportunity for the adults to get to know one another.
Open Doors is what we call our "Rentree" Event. It's the start of a new school year and work year in France. New people just arriving in Paris come looking for a church community.  We want to make everyone feel right at home and what better way than to get acquainted and to start meeting with others on a regular basis in a small group setting. It's our way to say, Welcome to Paris!"

SFC France Retreat in Grenoble
Students from Paris at The Bridge got together with students from Grenoble at REMIX for a great Fall weekend retreat from 4-6 October. We drove from Paris to arrive to a wonderful hot meal after having braved the rainy conditions.  Missionary colleagues, Mark and Dalene Good, LIsa Russi, Joy Krajicek, Matt and Maggie Nambot, and I shared in leading worship, preaching, and animating the small groups and games. Lisa and I even joined the students in a Saturday afternoon mountain hike. We all had a wonderful time. We must get together again.

University Students and Young Professionals Group
This Autumn Life Group session, we are participating in The Prayer Course. It is based upon the Lord's Prayer and can be found online at www.prayercourse.org. Each lesson has a video and discussion materials for the group leader. We have two groups this session in different locations, one meeting on Wednesday evening and the other on Thursday evening. Guy Orsot and I are thrilled that the students and young professionals are taking advantage of the opportunity to learn more about prayer and what's more important, to pray together every week.
