Marc
Marc Matheson, looking towards the future.
Never a dull moment at KWMR. Halloween Ball, Trick or Treating and then Pledge Drive! It's an ever evolving, dynamic environment down here at the radio station.

KWMR's Membership Coordinator Marc Matheson has been on the job since March 2010, and a volunteer programmer since August 2009. He has served in a part-time employee capacity charged with managing the station's donor database and membership processes. As a programmer Marc has created and hosted a number of shows, beginning with "The Place We Live" on alternate Saturdays, the discontinued "Africa and the Diaspora" music program, a stint on "Classical Wednesday," and more recently "Saturday Night Function," and the alternating "Sunday Celebration of Sacred World Music" and "Sunday Celebration of Gospel" shows.

Stay tuned for Marc's ongoing KWMR radio shows, though, for in that sense he's not going anywhere!

If you have questions about your membership or Calendar Club participation, please contact [email protected].

We wish Marc the best of luck in his future adventures and are happy that he will continue his shows on the KWMR airwaves.

Youth DJ: Backmasking
 Devon McMorrow & Loree Lewandowski

Wait, what was that? Back-masking is the concept of recording a musical phrase or message so that it can only be heard when the album is played backwards. The Beatles made back-masking famous on their album
Revolver. Instrumental portions were played in reverse on the record.

In the 1980's, a group of Christian fundamentalists called the Moral Majority accused several rock stars of hiding Satanic messages in their songs through back-masking. In his book Backward Masking Unmasked, Minister Jacob Aranza claimed that rock groups "are using back-masking to convey Satanic and drug-related messages to the subconscious." The concept of the back-masking/Satanism connection originated in a 1913 book written by mystic Aleister Crowley. Crowley stated that people with an interest in black magic would do well to "learn how to think and speak backwards."

One of the first references to back-masking was in the film The Exorcist, in which a tape of sounds made by a possessed person are found to have a hidden message when played backwards.

In 1981, the band Styx was accused of including the back-masked message "Satan move through our voices," on the song "Snowblind" from their album Paradise Theatre. Styx's guitarist James Young responded by saying, "If we want to make a statement, we'll do it in a way people can understand and not in a way where you have to go out and buy a $400 tape player to understand us." Styx then released the album Kilroy Was Here which satirized the Moral Majority.

According to the Moral Majority, Led Zeppelin's song "Stairway to Heaven" contained the message, "Here's to my sweet Satan," which could be heard when the song was played backwards. Another Christian fundamentalist group, Dial-theTruth Ministries, believed that the song contained the hidden message: "It's my sweet Satan. Oh I will sing because I live with Satan." Robert Plant responded by saying, "To me it's very sad, because 'Stairway to Heaven' was written with every best intention, and as far as reversing tapes and putting messages on the end, that's not my idea of making music."

In the Beatles' song "Strawberry Fields Forever" the message "I buried Paul" could supposedly be heard when the song was played backwards. This was part of a conspiracy theory in the late 60's that Paul MaCarney had died in a car crash. This rumor started after a traffic accident in 1967 involving Paul's car.

But some rock songs actually do contain back-masked messages. On the band Slayer's album Hell Awaits there are back-masked voices chanting the phrase "Join Us." Band member Tom Araya stated that this was used solely for effect, not as a way to promote Satanism. On the Pink Floyd album Empty Spaces a message can be found when played backwards. It says, "Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont..."

Electric Light Orchestra, or ELO, was accused of hiding Satanic messages in their album Eldorado that said, "He is the nasty one. Christ, you're infernal. It is said we're dead mean. Everyone who has the mark will live." ELO's singer/songwriter Jeff Lynne said that this was "skcollob" or "bollocks" backwards. ELO responded by releasing an album, Face the Music, that contained intentional backwards messages including, "The music is reversible, but time is not. Turn back. Turn back. Turn back. Turn back," in their song "Fire on High."

In Roger Waters' album Amused to Death, released in 1991, the message "Julia, however, in light and visions of the issues of Stanley, we have changed our minds. We have decided to include a backward message, Stanley, for you and all the other book burners" can be heard when played backwards. Many people believe that the "Stanley" referenced is Stanley Kubrick, director of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Kubrick had refused to let Waters use a sample from the movie on a previous album.

In 2001, the Simpsons aired an episode parodying back-masking. In the episode, entitled "New Kids on the Blecch," Bart Simpson joins a boy band called the Party Posse. Their song "Drop Da Bomb" included the lyric "Yvan eht nioj." When played played backwards it says "Join the navy."

Tune in to the Retro Rock Show this Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. to hear a collection of songs with "hidden messages."
